What a privilege it is to be your family ❤️ your first year with us hasn’t been what I planned or envisaged. In fact for months I was eaten alive with guilt that I couldn’t provide you with what I wanted. But your quiet solidarity and love in those dark moments have been part of the foundations of trying to move forward.

AND finally all those tiny little training sessions at 2am when I couldn’t sleep. Three mins at the end of the day when I could barely hold myself up. It’s all coming together. I feel like you and I are finally starting to click. Anyone who’s ever come to training with me knows I preach about the tiny coffee cup sessions-they work!

We are making our own adventures, exploring together. Building trust and relationship. This year has been about survival and you have been part of that. The boys adore you, I’ve actually never known a young Goldie to be so calm, so in touch with their young family members. You are exactly what those boys need and we didn’t even know it.

You are a terrible theif and I mean terrible 🤣 if it’s on the ground no matter how disgusting you claim it as your own- LEAVE & DROP has been very useful here.

Your recall is amazing for your age, not bothered by gunfire, fireworks or thunder, but your own reflection can terrify you 🤣🤣

The saying that you never know what dog you need u til you get them. Couldn’t be more true here. You are the pawfect family dog Tonko ❤️🫶🏼

Thank you for trusting us with one of Lotte’s babies 🫶🏼 she’s a complete dreamboat and we love her very VERY much.

Team Hounds and Hooves have been on the road again!!

Three different competitions over two days and they have SMASHED it 🏆

At Top-Notch Dogs competition lovely Maple came first in the medium height 🥇

At Watercombe Dogs’ Tunnel Fun Maisie got a first 🥇 Zippy got a second 🥈 and Sky got a third 🥉

Then at last night’s Razgility Steeplechase Tipsy got a first 🥇 Maisie got a second 🥈 and Zippy got a third 🥉 in their respective heights.

What a rosette collection!!

Special mention to Dott who is so super duper speedy these days and so close to consistent wins, and Toby who went to Tunnel Fun and did brilliantly, just had complaints about tunnel competitions not including more see-saws… 😂

A huge well done everyone ❤️

Does your dog get easily distracted? Here are 5 tips to help keep them focused 👇

🐾 Start with smart management strategies – Start with environment control, limiting distractions to set your dog up for success. For recall training, this might mean using a long line to prevent runaway distractions. Make it hard for them to practise unwanted behaviours, so they’re more likely to choose the right action.

🐾 Work at the right distance – Work at a manageable distance from triggers, keeping your dog just below their “excitement threshold.” Gradually closing this distance will improve their ability to focus and stay calm near distractions over time.

🐾 Reward calm disengagement moments – Train your dog to look away from distractions naturally, without cues. If they disengage on their own, reinforce it with praise. Start further from the distraction if they struggle, gradually working closer as they learn to self-manage.

🐾 Choose functional, instinctive rewards – Tailor rewards to fit your dog’s instinctive desires. For instance, if your dog loves to chase, use toys that mimic chasing behaviour, or let them sniff around after good behaviour if they’re scent-driven.

🐾 Provide appropriate daily outlets – Some “naughty” behaviours stem from unmet needs. Make sure your dog’s natural instincts, such as sniffing or running, are satisfied in safe, planned ways to reduce impulsive behaviours.

Say hello to Nala, Granite, Maggie, Margot, and Minty 👋

They are actually on week two of their puppy classes now, and yesterday had an amazing time looking at recall, but the rain made my phone very slippy so have some of last weeks snaps instead… 😂

Something that is very prominent in this class is genetic influences from the variety of breeds. Yep, even at 14 weeks old those collie stalking instincts are switched on and our sight hounds have the most fantastic eye for things to chase!

It’s so important that when you are choosing a breed you take into account what they are bred to do, and understand the possible behaviours that we can see in those breeds.

These owners are all over it though, they knew exactly what they were getting into so now the fun starts! 🤪

Well done everyone, looking forward to seeing you all again next week and hearing how your recall training has been going 💨

HUGEST congratulations to our lovely Emily ❤️🐾

For completing her MSc Applied Animal Behaviour and Training 🐶🎓

It has been an absolute privilege to work alongside her all these years (we can’t work out if it’s 7 or 😎. She is an incredible trainer and behaviour coach and she has the brightest future ahead.

She started at H&H as a dog walker, the dogs LOVED her obvs! When she went on maternity leave to have Alf I wasn’t sure she would return, but she did ❤️

Through Covid she worked to obtain her first training qualification with the DTC and when things opened up again I was delighted to be able to ask her to join the training side of the business.

Alongside working she obtained her BSc and her APDT membership. All while raising her lovely son Alf ❤️

Her knowledge, compassion and dedication to dogs and their humans is incredible ❤️

I am so so proud of her and I wish I could tell her 17 year old self not to fret because she’s going to do amazing things!

Please join me in congratulating her on such an amazing milestone!

🐾🐾

Also how pretty does she look? 🫶🏼🫶🏼

If every dog guardian knew these five things… the dog world would be a much happier place. 🐾

We see so many guardians putting pressure on themselves (and their dogs) to be perfect… but real training starts with understanding.

Here are 5 things we really want you to know:

💬 Your dog isn’t giving you a hard time – they’re having a hard time

💬 Training is about building a two-way relationship, not controlling your dog

💬 Mental stimulation matters, especially during autumn and winter

💬 Recall is a safety skill, not just something for the ‘good’ dogs

💬 Your bond is your biggest asset – protect it

Which one hits home for you?

Drop a 🩵 in the comments if you’re working on any of these right now.
