History of Jeffrey House Farm ๐Ÿก๐ŸŽ

Looking back at these old photos of Jeffrey House, itโ€™s amazing to see how much has changed over the years โ€” the buildings, the road, the people passing byโ€ฆ but one thing has always stayed the same: thereโ€™s always been horses in the field. ๐Ÿด

Jeffrey House has been a well-known part of Fishlake for generations, with plenty of stories behind its gates. Back in 1973, when these photos were taken, it was home to Mr. John England โ€” a familiar face in the village and a local farmer at the time. At one point, the family even ran a mink farmโ€ฆ until someone let them all loose, causing absolute chaos in the village! ๐Ÿ˜ฌ๐Ÿซฃ

But like many farms, the family later adapted with the times and moved on to other thing's.

So much has changed, but itโ€™s lovely to know that some things never do. The sight of horses quietly grazing beside Jeffrey House has been a constant through the years.

โ€” a little piece of tradition that still lives on today. ๐ŸŽโค๏ธ

We stumbled across the loveliest little gem today Sandbeck Farm! โœจ๏ธ

Such a charming spot with a great little stall where we picked up some delicious honey and the sweetest little ornaments.

The owners were absolutely lovely, and the whole place has such a welcoming feel. ... Even better we found out theyโ€™re fellow Shetland pony lovers! ๐Ÿด๐Ÿคฃ

Canโ€™t wait to visit again soon.

๐Ÿด General Tips for Horse Care in Extreme Heat (UK Conditions)
1. Water, Water, Water

Access to clean, cool water at all times is essential.
Horses can drink 20โ€“55 litres per day, more in extreme heat.
Check buckets and troughs multiple times daily.
Use electrolytes if the horse is sweating heavily.
2. Shelter & Shade

Ensure horses have access to shadeโ€”trees, field shelters, or buildings.
If stabled, ensure good airflowโ€”use fans (safely) or open windows.
Avoid turnout during the hottest part of the day (usually 11amโ€“4pm).
3. Workload Management

Ride early morning or late evening when itโ€™s cooler.
Lighten the workload or give rest days during heatwaves.
Watch for signs of heat stress: excessive sweating, rapid breathing, lethargy.
4. Cooling Measures

Hose down with cool (not ice-cold) water, focusing on neck, chest, and legs.
Scrape water off to help coolingโ€”donโ€™t leave water to sit on the coat.
Repeat if necessary.
Use fly sheets or UV-protective rugs only if breathable and lightweight.
5. Feeding Adjustments

Ensure forage isn't dusty/mouldyโ€”it can ferment in the heat.
Reduce hard feed if horse is doing less work.
Wet feeds or soaked hay can increase water intake.
6. Field & Stable Management

Check for dangerous insects, as they thrive in heat.
Avoid turnout on scorched grass, which has low nutrition and can cause issues like laminitis.
โš ๏ธ Warning Signs of Heat Stress in Horses
Heavy sweating or stopped sweating
Panting or laboured breathing
High temperature (over 38.5ยฐC / 101.5ยฐF)
Lethargy or confusion
Dehydration (skin pinch test: skin doesnโ€™t snap back)
Dark urine or not urinating
Call a vet immediately if you suspect heatstroke.

For youngsters, veterans or those with a history of worm problems or high counts, the gap should be shorter; six to eight weeks as they are more susceptible to infection. Summer parasite control means:

โœ… Worm egg count every 8-12 weeks
โœ… EquiSal test for tapeworm if you haven't in the last six months
โœ… Look out for bots, pinworm and ticks
โœ… Control flies and other insects
โ›ฑ Consider testing sand levels in the gut if on restricted grazing or dirt track systems.
