Following our previous post, one of our customers has informed us that their vet has diagnosed their dog with an upper respiratory infection rather than kennel cough.
We thought it would be helpful to explain that these terms are not always completely separate. “Kennel cough” is a common name for a group of contagious respiratory infections affecting dogs, while “upper respiratory infection” is a broader term describing an infection of the nose, throat or airways. Regardless of the exact diagnosis, both can produce similar symptoms and, most importantly, both can be contagious.
The advice therefore remains the same:
If your dog develops a cough or any signs of a respiratory illness, please keep them away from other dogs.
Avoid dog parks, group walks, training classes, grooming appointments and day boarding until your dog has fully recovered.
Please also be mindful of neighbouring dogs through fences, as respiratory infections can spread through coughing and sneezing over short distances.
If your dog becomes lethargic, loses their appetite, has difficulty breathing or you are concerned for any reason, please contact your vet.
