✨Meet Angus✨

Angus is a 10 month old Doberman. He has been receiving physiotherapy for strengthening to help build muscle, improve the weakness in his forelimbs/carpi and adjust his posture following the malnutrition he received prior to being adopted by his owners.

With the dedication from his owners and his hydrotherapy and physiotherapy sessions, he has made significant improvements and enjoys learning his home exercises.

✨Meet Fynn✨

Fynn is a 2 year old border collie who has a left hindlimb lameness with intermittent hopping due to a paw and pad deformity.

I have been treating Fynn for a while now and have been working on re-educating his gait and encouraging the use of his left hindlimb, as well as correcting and alleviating any compensations.

This includes massage, PROM, stretches, weight shifting exercises and strengthening exercises.

Fynn has greatly improved and is consistently engaging his Left hindlimb on soft surfaces and maintains good muscle mass on the limb.

✨ Meet Olly ✨

Olly is a 12-year-old golden retriever, he has been diagnosed with elbow and hip osteoarthritis and has multiple chronic disc protrusions.

The main goals for Olly are to reduce pain and tension, improve engagement of his muscles, improve joint range of motion and enhance proprioception.

Olly’s current treatment involves a lot of massage and stretches, as well as laser and a home exercise programme.

During our session yesterday, I incorporated a proprioceptive walkway including different surfaces and ground poles. This exercise helps to enhance body awareness through the use of sensory stimulation, which leads to the stimulation and improvement of motor function and overall coordination.

He also enjoys his underwater treadmill sessions at Highwood Canine Hydrotherapy

✨ Meet Lola ✨

Lola is a 13-year-old border collie, she had a vestibular episode in March due to idiopathic vestibular syndrome. Vestibular syndrome refers to a group of diseases that affect the vestibular system, which is responsible for maintaining posture, balance and spatial orientation.

Common signs are:
- Loss of balance and falling over
- Ataxia
- Nystagmus (Flickering of the eyes from side to side or up and down)
- Head tilt
- Circling
- Vomiting due to motion sickness or dizziness

Physiotherapy and a rehabilitation programme tailored to your dog can help get your dog back on their feet. Recovery from a vestibular episode will often take months and therefore physiotherapy provides a vital part in the treatment of the patients decreased activity during the initial stages of recovery.

Currently for Lola, we are now working on returning her to her previous activity levels by:
- Improving her core stability
- Improving her awareness of body position and posture, including walking in straight lines
- Active weight shifts
- Gait re-education

This involves the use of manual therapies (e.g. massage and stretches) and remedial exercises.

Walking aids (as seen in the video) are also vital for recovery. The help em up harness is a good example of this, the harness provides more security and confidence for the dog as they can be supported to limit the risk of falls and allows for more controlled exercise so that they can remain active. The harness also provides peace of mind for the owner as it allows them to safety control the movement of their dog and allow for easy lifting if required.
