The Nematodirus forecast is showing the peak hatch is likely to be mid to late June so now is the time to be checking your lambs and drenching them.

If you gave a white drench earlier this year already it’s important to get a faeces sample into us to check it worked. You may have been a bit too soon.

The forecast can be used in combination with your grazing history to assess the risk of Nematodirus infection in your lambs.

Hopefully you will never need it but NSA have produced some great advice on how do to deal with an incident of sheep worrying on farm

How should you deal with an incident of sheep worrying on your farm? The most important thing is to stay safe and stay legal.

This checklist can help you remember the key steps. Go to go.nationalsheep.org.uk/dealwithsheepworrying for more detailed information.

If you have had a BVD young stock screen and had animals come back as positive for antibodies the next step is to do a PI hunt. This tests all the animals on farm to look for any animals constantly shedding BVD virus.
Gwaredu BVD have created a useful guide to explain why PI hunting is so important: https://buff.ly/36lfoAc
There is currently funding available for PI hunts. Please contact the surgery to organise yours.

It’s not always easy for beef farmers to ensure calves get the right quality and quantity of colostrum, it depends on the cow’s personality a lot of the time!
However it’s a crucial stage of a calf’s life. Without it they are hugely susceptible to diseases such as pneumonia and find it more difficult to thrive.
Talk to one of the vets if you’re concerned you might have an issue!

Good colostrum management is crucial for protecting calves against disease.

Give a first feed of four litres or 10% of bodyweight within four hours of birth, and follow up with a further two litres within 12 hours of birth.
