Last Sunday we had our fourth workshop in Blo' Norton, which was all about "Lovely Lead Walking".
As always we covered the theory, exploring why dogs pull and why it can be such a difficult thing for them to learn and execute reliably. We then looked at various practical exercises to teach the four elements of loose lead walking.
🔹️ Focus/engagement with the owner - yes, this one applies to virtually anything you do with your dog
🔹️ Speed matching - we observed in real time how hard many dogs find it to move at our pace which for them feels incredibly slow. And there were a few aha moments from owners when practicing these exercises
🔹️ Position - that's what we generally do in our classes so this wasn't a problem for anyone. But we did some free-shaping exercises that helped dogs learn to find that desired position themselves without luring
🔹️ Lead pressure - we are not talking about pulling and yanking here as an aversive, but simply teaching dogs to become aware of the increase of lead pressure when they get to the end of the lead and to adjust themselves accordingly. Another few aha moments with this. 🙂
It was a pleasure to teach this workshop (which were in fact two sessions due to popular demand) and seeing the puzzle pieces fit into place along the way.
And as you can see in the last picture of the second session, the dogs were shattered by the end from the mental workout and some even nearly fell asleep. Result. 🤣
