Wagging Tails Dog Training - East Anglia

Wagging Tails Dog Training - East Anglia Dog training classes in Blo' Norton (Diss) and Great Hockham (Thetford) for puppies and adults, as well as 121 training. Puppy Classes? Puppy Socialisation?

From puppy classes to advanced training, taught by a qualified trainer and behaviourist with over 30 years practical experience. Obedience training? Behaviour problems? Dog walking? We run classes and offer 1-2-1 help and home visits in Diss, Thetford, Bury St. Edmunds, Attleborough and surrounding areas. Vera Marney is qualified (BSc in canine behaviour and training) and has 30 years dog training

experience. She is a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers and the Pet Professional Guild. She is also a volunteer trainer for Dog A.I.D. helping disabled owners to train their dog as an assistance dog. We use only reward based force-free training methods, which are suitable for all breeds/mixed breeds, from puppy to oldie and of course also for rescue dogs. We aim to help owners to shape their dog into a well behaved member of the family and a good canine citizen. And we do it in a way that is fun and effective! We also offer a tailored dog walking service, walking dogs individually or in pairs.

Last Sunday we had our fourth workshop in Blo' Norton, which was all about "Lovely Lead Walking".

As always we covered the theory, exploring why dogs pull and why it can be such a difficult thing for them to learn and execute reliably. We then looked at various practical exercises to teach the four elements of loose lead walking.

🔹️ Focus/engagement with the owner - yes, this one applies to virtually anything you do with your dog

🔹️ Speed matching - we observed in real time how hard many dogs find it to move at our pace which for them feels incredibly slow. And there were a few aha moments from owners when practicing these exercises

🔹️ Position - that's what we generally do in our classes so this wasn't a problem for anyone. But we did some free-shaping exercises that helped dogs learn to find that desired position themselves without luring

🔹️ Lead pressure - we are not talking about pulling and yanking here as an aversive, but simply teaching dogs to become aware of the increase of lead pressure when they get to the end of the lead and to adjust themselves accordingly. Another few aha moments with this. 🙂

It was a pleasure to teach this workshop (which were in fact two sessions due to popular demand) and seeing the puzzle pieces fit into place along the way.

And as you can see in the last picture of the second session, the dogs were shattered by the end from the mental workout and some even nearly fell asleep. Result. 🤣

How often do you practice recall with your dog?

Good recall isn't usually just the result of the owner or the reward being more exciting than the environment - although that helps it is more often than not impossible because whatever we offer is never going to compare to chasing a hare or following exciting sniffs.

So what creates good recall?

➡️ Good recall is fun engagement with the owner.

➡️ Good recall is reliable disengagement from the environment.

➡️ Good recall is a conditioned response turning into habit.

And to create habit you need lots and lots of repetition! Just think of how many hours you needed to drive until you stopped thinking about every step you needed to take to control the car and keep it moving smoothly, until you did things automatically.

Practicing recall frequently, in lots of environments and around different levels and types of distractions creates a good recall habit.

And that's a wrap.

The Reliable Recall Workshop took place this morning, we made it an early start to beat the heat. Luckily the hall stays quite nice and cool so all the dogs and people were fine.

As usual we covered the theoretical and practical side of recall training.

We looked at the cue, the criteria, the training (teaching, generalising and proofing).

We put a huge emphasis on management on walks (lead, choice of walking areas, time of day etc), management during difficult life stages like adolescence where our previously very compliant puppies get more independent and distracted and pray driven, and we also looked at management of breed specific behaviours.

We discussed and practiced how to create a dog that sees value in coming back and how to reward our dogs effectively - all done via play and food rewards and engaging praise of course as well as life rewards.

And then we covered lots of exercises which included playing with toys, food games, breed specific games, distraction and disengagement games and actual recall exercises.

Here is a picture of spaniel Puddle recalling away from treats on the floor. If your dog can't disengage and call away from treats or toys, then there is little chance that they can do it around running animals or interesting smells. So that's where the practice begins. 🙂
