One of the best parts of my job is seeing what happens when animals are given time, choice, and respect.

I’ve been working with a lovely dog who found nail clipping genuinely frightening. She had already tried vets and other places, and just opening the drawer with the clippers in was enough to make her leave the room. So we took a different approach, at home, where she feels safest and least on guard.

We started with trust and consent. Every interaction was her choice. If she wanted to take her paw away, she could. We never held onto her. We rewarded her for offering her paw, then for leaving it there a little longer. The clippers started on the floor, then in my hand. Eventually, while she was happily eating a treat, I could gently touch her paw with the clippers. All of it at her pace, with lots of breaks.

On our first visit, we did not clip any nails at all, but by the end of the session she was comfortable being in the same room as the clippers and offering her paw. On the second visit, we managed one nail, and she was so surprised when she realised it did not hurt that she had a full-on celebration. Today, on visit three, we managed four nails.

This is cooperative care and desensitisation in action. No restraint. No forcing. Just building confidence, step by step, in a place where she feels safe. Watching her confidence grow, and seeing her come to the door happier and more relaxed each time, is honestly one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.

Well Done Bo 💞💓

Hi everyone 👋

A slightly nervous hello from a local vet nurse, covering the Norfolk / Suffolk borders

I’m Leanne. I qualified as a veterinary nurse 11 years ago, and moved here from the Stowmarket area a few years back.

For 17 years I worked in vets around Mid Suffolk where I did regular home visits and really enjoyed that side of the work. Since moving here, I’ve missed being out in the community as much, though I’ve still helped out friends and neighbours. It’s felt like a natural next step to start offering that support more openly again, so I’ve set up Your Home Vet Nurse.

More information is on my page if you’d like to take a look, or reach out and message me. Thanks to anyone who managed to read this far!

A quick note about what I can (and can’t) do as a veterinary nurse 🐾

In addition to my visits for routine care such as nail clips and ear cleaning etc, I’ve had quite a few messages asking if I can vaccinate pets, give injections, or provide medical treatment during visits. I thought it might be helpful to explain how this works under UK veterinary regulations.

Veterinary nurses are regulated professionals, and what we can do is governed by the RCVS (Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons). These rules are there to protect animals, owners, vets and nurses.

What I can’t do independently

Even though I’m a qualified, registered veterinary nurse, I cannot:
• Diagnose illness
• Prescribe medication
• Vaccinate animals independently
• Administer prescription-only medicines without veterinary direction

So I can’t just pop in and give injections or medication unless the correct veterinary framework is in place.

What owners can legally do themselves

Pet owners can:
• Give medication prescribed by their vet to their own pet
• Administer insulin or oral medications once prescribed
• Carry out routine daily care

This is because the law allows owners to consent for treatment of their own animals.

What lay (general public) people can do

People who are not vets or nurses can:
• Feed, clean, exercise and care for pets
• Provide basic day-to-day care

They cannot give prescription medication or carry out medical treatment on someone else’s animal.

What I can do - with your vet involved

If your pet is under the care of a veterinary practice and your vet is happy, I can:
• Liaise directly with your vet
• Administer prescribed medications (e.g. insulin injections, oral meds)
• Carry out post-operative checks and nursing care
• Support an existing treatment plan

This must always be done under the direction of your vet, and I’m very happy to work alongside practices where appropriate.

Why I’m sharing this

This isn’t about being awkward or unhelpful - it’s about working legally, safely and professionally, and making sure your pet gets the right care without putting anyone at risk.

If you’re unsure whether something is possible, please just ask. I’m always happy to explain options or speak to your vet if that helps.

I’ve had a few people ask about pet sitting and home visits this week, so I’ve popped together a little flyer with my current options and prices to make things clearer and easier to share 😊

It covers overnight stays (evening + morning care) and daytime visits, all in your pet’s own home, with the same calm, welfare-led approach I use for everything.

If you’re planning any time away and want to check availability, just send me a message with your dates and a bit about your pets 🐾

Hi everyone 👋

I just wanted to say a huge thank you for such a lovely first week.

I’ve been really touched by the kind messages, the welcomes, and the trust people have already shown me. It’s been genuinely nice getting out and meeting so many lovely pets and their owners again.

I’ve added a few photos from some of my visits this week (shared with permission). They’re a pretty good snapshot of what I’ve been up to, and honestly, they’ve been a joy to see.

Moving here from Suffolk all those years ago, I really missed feeling part of a local pet community like I used to, so this week has meant a lot more to me than I can probably put into words.

Thank you for the warm welcome, the recommendations, and the support. It’s really appreciated.

Leanne 😊

Today I had the pleasure of helping one brave little lady with her ‘back end business.’ She handled her a**l gland appointment like a champ-no ifs, ands, or ‘butts’ about it! She’s strutting off feeling much better now!”
