The seven second rule: if you can't comfortably hold the back of your hand on the pavement for seven seconds, it's too hot for paws. On warm days we head for grass, shade and forest tracks, or shift walks to the cooler ends of the day. Your dog's pads will thank you. ☀️🐾

Quick dog fact for your Saturday: dogs barely sweat. They lose almost all their heat by panting, with just a little through their paws. It's why shade, fresh water and rest breaks do so much more for a warm dog than we tend to think. 🐶

Day trips sorted, dog sorted. If you're making the most of the summer with days out, your dog doesn't have to spend it staring at the door. Adder season is here on our Highland trails. 🐾 Adders are shy and far more likely to flee than bite, but on warm days it pays to know the risk. Keep dogs on the lead through long grass and heather, stick to the paths, and if your dog is ever bitten (usually a fast, painful swelling on the face or a leg) get to a vet straight away. Too warm for a big midday walk? Tire the nose instead. 👃🐾

On hot days the kindest thing is often to skip the midday heat and let your dog use their brain instead, because a sniffing dog is a tired dog! Try scattering their kibble in the garden for a "hunt", stuff and freeze a Kong, or make a quick snuffle mat from a rubber mat and some fleece strips.

Twenty minutes of nose-work can tire a dog out as much as a long walk, no hot pavements needed. (We save the proper walks for the cool of the morning and evening.) 🐾
