As we move through the Autumn months and into Winter, it can be easy to lose our way with our horses . I find myself repeating to clients on a daily basis ‘little and often is ok’.
What do I really mean by this?
What do you really want to improve about your partnership?
🏇🏻 Do you have a problem with your position? Your hands, your seat, your leg position? Work on it. In the saddle. Out of the saddle with exercises that are specific to that issue.
🔲 Is your square halt losing you marks? Work on it. From the ground. With poles. On board. Whilst hacking.
🤔 Have we talked about something in your horse’s posture that needs to change? Work on it now. The physio exercises that I sent (that you may or may not be doing religiously 😅). Use low intensity, walk work exercises to target that element exclusively.
For Ernie and I, I’m working on strengthening/lengthening his topline posture. I’m also working on a more true ‘inside leg to outside rein’ connection. These elements requiring a new muscle movement pattern from both me and my pony. We work for around 20 mins at the walk, around varied field terrain. When we kick into the beginning of 2026 season, we will hopefully be able to build strength upon these new movement patterns. I’m also adding in a new supplement to support gut health, reviewing our season I think something Ernie will benefit from.
See benefit in reducing fitness levels slightly, in muscle tone changing so that you can mould and improve. Allow tissue strain and inflammation built up over the season to resolve. And don’t forget to just enjoy being around your horse. Competition season can be intense and driven.
What is the true goal? LONGEVITY. Fix, heal, improve ahead of next year. Review what went well and what needed work. Make small changes now.
If you need guidance, please book in and I’ll help to identify what you should be focusing on; and how to do it considering your restraints.
Here’s a happy Amy & Ernie out showing - but I can honestly say my face is much the same when he takes an active and connected step with the hind leg whilst we are working in the dark, in the rain, in the field in front of the house. Maybe I’m just mad 😅 My pony means the world to me and I’ll do what I can to do the best for him.
