It is that time of the year when fireworks will start going off from dusk on any night. Even if your dog was 'fine' last year, it doesn't necessarily mean they will be this year. Puppy fear periods, adolescence and getting older with changes in hearing can be some of the reasons they can start to become frightened.
There are many firework sounds that you can play - Dogs Trust https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/dog-advice/understanding-your-dog/sound-therapy-for-pets is just one of them that offer this, but it is not a case of just playing it nice and loud and getting your dog 'use to it'.
Start with playing these on a very low volume when your dog or puppy is in a nice relaxed state - dozing on your lap, licki mat, nice chew, snuffle mat, find it games are just some of the relaxing and calming activities you can give them whilst the noise is on low in the background and your normal TV/Radio/Music is on as it would be on the nights coming up. Don't mix up relaxing activities with brain games which could be causing frustration.
If your dog stays relaxed you can turn the volume up a little bit each day so the dog's brain learns to associate these sounds with being in a relaxed state.
Get prepared to ensure you have these activities to hand when the fireworks do go off.
Remember you can support your dog, don't ignore them, fireworks will not become scarier if you are cuddling your dog!
Start these preparations now if you have not already.
