It's grass seed season! 😣
These barbed seeds easily attach to fur and can burrow into the skin, causing pain and infection.

Here are some prevention tips:
🌾Avoid areas with long grass during summer.
🌾Trim coats, especially around feet, ears, and between toes – particularly important for breeds like spaniels.
🌾After walks, check your dog thoroughly and remove any visible seeds.

☀️ It’s already hot and it’s set to get hotter! 🥵
With temperatures like these predicted, keeping your pets safe is a priority and there’s things you can do to help prevent heatstroke and sunburn:
- Walk dogs first thing in the morning or last thing at night when it’s cooler- if you can’t, don’t walk them today. Missing one walk won’t hurt but heatstroke really can be fatal 🐕
- Do not leave pets in cars unattended for any length of time. Parking in the shade and leaving a window open has very little impact on how hot it gets and pets can die in hot cars 🚗
- Use pet safe suncream on skin that’s likely to burn 🌞
- Test the pavement with the back of your hand- if it’s hot for you, it’s hot for their paws and their paw pads absolutely can and do get burnt 🔥
- Keep cats inside where possible 🐈
- Make sure small animal housing is in the shade throughout the day and access to fresh water should be available at all times 🐰
- Check rabbits, guinea pigs etc for signs of fly strike a minimum of twice a day 🪰
- Fresh water is a must for all pets 💧

Even on concrete, pesky little grass seeds can sneak their way in to unsuspecting feet!
Skittle had a lovely evening walk on a short lead on the pavement and, upon returning home and having her feet and ears checked, a grass seed was found burrowing its way into her toes! Grass seeds are barbed and can track up limbs fast, causing no end of issues including infections.
This is a real reminder to check ears and feet after every walk, even if you’ve stuck to the pavements! Thanks, Skittle ❤️

Did you know? Human suncream is toxic to our pets.

Donʼt worry though, pet safe suncream is available to protect your pets from sunburn.

We would recommend applying pet safe suncream to any parts of your pet that has pink skin showing on sunny days if they spend time outside - black and white or fully white cats with pink skin are a prime example!
Unprotected continued exposure to the sun can lead to skin cancer.

As the warmer months arrive, we are more likely to spot Britainʼs only venomous snake - the adder. While bites in dogs are thankfully rare, cases tend to peak between June and August. 🐍

Adders are a protected species and these beautiful creatures are an important part of our ecosystem. They are not aggressive and only bite in self defence - including when stepped on or surprised by a curious dog!
By staying alert and respecting their space, we can help protect both our dogs and our native wildlife. Adders are most commonly found in drier, open habitats like:
🌳Woodland edges
🌱Grassy heaths and moorland
🏖Sandy coastal areas and rocky paths
Keeping dogs under close control or on a lead, and sticking to clear paths, can help to avoid encounters.

Molly recently came in for a mass removal and an FNA (Fine Needle Aspirate) of another lump- RVNs Fay and Suzanne supported her throughout her surgery with Vet Kate, and gave cuddles in abundance as she woke up back in our dog ward ❤️ she had a beautiful recovery and went home happily when she was ready 🥰

We have had a stray ferret handed in to us this morning! We believe she is a female with no microchip and was found in the Sheddeck Court area of Dereham. She is incredibly friendly and well-handled so we’re hoping she has a loving home that are looking for her!

Beautiful Daisy came in to spend the day with us recently for spay surgery! Vet Lorenza and RVN Suzanne looked after her in theatre during her procedure, RVN Lucy prepped her for her surgery and RVN Laura saw her through her recovery back in kennels! Every patient is supported and loved by pretty much the whole team at some point during their day with us 😆

We have very sadly had a deceased cat brought in to us this morning. We believe her to be an unmicrochipped female, black with a white patch on her tummy and a white bib. She was found on Norwich Road.
