Meet Storm 💛 A beautiful Smooth Collie, and the well-deserved winner of the East Anglian Collie Club's Collie of the Year, Puppy Award.

I was delighted to donate three portrait prizes for this special event, and this portrait marks the final one completed. Storm was an absolute joy to draw, with her elegant features, intelligent expression, and that wonderfully sleek Smooth Collie coat.

This piece was created using pastel pencils on Clairfontaine Pastelmat, a surface that allows for incredible detail, softness, and depth, perfect for capturing every strand of fur and Storm's gentle character.

Smooth Collies are such a special breed. As one of the UK's vulnerable native breeds, they deserve to be celebrated, preserved, and seen more often. Their loyal nature, versatility, and unmistakable elegance make them truly unforgettable companions.

It has been an honour to create this portrait and support such a wonderful breed club. Congratulations again to Storm and her owners.

Spring feeling 🪻

I had the pleasure of drawing this gorgeous Labrador recently as the client had unfortunately been let down last minute by another artist they had placed an order with.

Labradors definitely put the bounce in spring 🌼 and the lovely blue undertones to this portrait were fun to draw.

Sketch Vs Final art

What to expect?

Sometimes it can be a bit nerve wracking receiving a sketch and not entirely being sure of what the artist can see and how it'll come to life! This is completely normal.

My sketches are fairly loose and are a map for me to know where certain shadows hit, the anatomy of your pet and also to mark where certain colourings or markings are that are unique to them. Each line holds its own weight.

Seeing a sketch vs the final art work is fascinating to me. I love seeing where an art piece started and how it finished.

Sketching softness, one line at a time ✏️

There's no denying that collies (both Rough and Smooth varieties) are my favorite breed of dog to draw! This stems from me owning a pair myself and how much I loved seeing Rough Collies in films. The famous 'Lassie' comes to mind, although I also loved the Collie appearance in 101 dalmatians.

Meet Raffy — a soulful, beautiful black cat that had a deep bond with her human. This portrait was a surprise birthday gift for a client’s son, who shared a special connection with his feline friend. 💛

Pet portraits make incredibly meaningful gifts — especially for those who hold their animals close. Whether it’s a birthday, anniversary, or just because, capturing the spirit of a beloved companion is a heartfelt gesture that lasts a lifetime.

When drawing black or white pets, some assume there’s not much “there” to bring out. But black fur is full of subtle hues — soft browns, blues, and even hints of purple — all revealing themselves in the light. Raffy’s portrait gave me the chance to explore these beautiful undertones, showing that even a "plain" coat holds incredible depth and personality.

This piece was created using pastel pencils on pastelmat paper — perfect for capturing the rich texture of fur and the glimmer of intelligent eyes.
