Super excited to announce we are hosting the fabulous Dr Jacqueline Boyd, Animal Scientist and Canine Consultant for a new workshop- 'SPANIEL SURVIVAL ESSENTIALS’ at Dunn Dogs Derby! 🐾
A Project Spaniel workshop devoted to spaniels and their handlers, working on tips, tricks, tasks and skills to enhance your relationship and training partnership.
Sunday 4th May 2025, 10am to 2 pm (with refreshment breaks and a 30 min ‘working’ lunch to discuss key topics)
Details: This workshop is the perfect opportunity for spaniel handlers to focus on developing and revising fundamental and more advanced skills that are essential for anyone living with a spaniel, especially those from working lines.
What we will cover:
• Characteristics of spaniels relevant to handling and training
• The importance of focus and where that focus is!
• Proximity work – why this is critical and how it impacts on hunting behaviour
• Recall skills
• Retrieve skills
A maximum of 6 handler spaces are available in this workshop and if you have more than one spaniel, you are welcome to mix and match dogs within the workshop sessions. The workshop will follow a canine-centred approach meaning that the tasks will be tailored to each individual dog and handler, so puppies are as welcome as older dogs.
The aim of the workshop is: to provide hints, tips and skills to support your training and relationship with your spaniel in a way that is enjoyable and functional for you and your dog. There is an emphasis on supporting each individual dog/handler and your ambitions, whether you would like to work your spaniel or simply want a happy companion.
Your coach: Dr Jacqueline Boyd, MAPDT (01583), Animal Behaviour and Training Council Registered Animal Training Instructor and spaniel afficionado!
Jacqueline had lived with, worked and trained cocker spaniels for more than 20 years and currently lives with a team of six. She has experienced the highs and lows of training spaniels with the various ‘challenges’ that these funny, optimistic and active dogs bring with them, meaning she has a pragmatic awareness of working with them in a positive, kind and supportive way that doesn’t suppress their joyous outlook on life, while also ensuring that they are good canine citizens and wonderful companions. In April 2025, Jacqueline’s second book, ‘The Spaniel Survival Guide’ will be published – an everyday ‘users guide’ for spaniel caregivers.
