Etwall & Beech Vets

Etwall & Beech Vets We are a well-established, local small animal practice, located in the heart of South Derbyshire. We have two sites in the villages of Willington and Etwall.

Our practice ethos is one of traditional values with modern facilities and a forward-thinking team. We pride ourselves in treating every patient as an individual and, as we are a small friendly team, we like that our patients get to know us well! Our team of vets has a varied range of expertise from skin care to surgery and our sister practice, Sarah Smith Cardiology, has two highly trained cardio

logists (heart specialists). We have a caring and highly qualified nursing team who are involved in all aspects of our work to help minimise stress and do our best to ensure your pets have a good experience at the vets. We aim to cater for all your pet’s needs so if your animal is particularly anxious about coming to see the vet, we will happily arrange an appointment at quieter times. Our Etwall surgery has separate cat and dog waiting areas and kennels.

🌾 Grass Seed Warning 🌾

Last week Saffi came to us with a very uncomfortable ear after a recent holiday away. Turns out her little trip around the fields of Spain came with a souvenir! We removed a grass seed from her ear — and although they may look harmless, grass seeds can cause a lot of pain and problems for our pets.

These tiny seeds can easily get trapped in:
🐾 Paws
👂 Ears
👃 Noses
👁 Eyes
🧥 Fur and skin

Once attached, they can travel under the skin and lead to infections, swelling, abscesses, and significant discomfort.

Signs to watch for include:
• Excessive licking or chewing at paws
• Head shaking or scratching at ears
• Sudden sneezing
• Swelling or limping
• Redness or discharge

During walks, especially in long or dry grass, it’s a good idea to check your dog over afterwards — particularly around the paws and ears.

If you notice any of these signs, give us a call straight away. Early removal can help prevent more serious complications.

Meet Stella, our current houseguest.

Stella was brought in by a member of the public and was found to have ringworm; a nasty fungal infection. She has been treated with medicated shampoo and is doing really well and getting ready to be re- released.
Here are some photos of Stella having a bath to brighten your day 🦔🛁

☀️☀️Preventing heatstroke in hot weather ☀️☀️

With the current high temperatures, we urge our clients to take precautions to protect pets against heatstroke. Heatstroke is a very serious condition that in severe cases can cause seizures, organ damage and death.

Tips to prevent heatstroke ✅

🐾 Only walk when it’s cool (early mornings/late evenings)
🐾 Check ground temperature before walking
🐾 Encourage pets to get wet
🐾 Consider clipping fur for long haired pets
🐾 Provide shade
🐾 Ensure plenty of fresh water is provided
🐾 No unnecessary travel and never leave them in a car
🐾 Take extra care with flat faced breeds and overweight dogs

Please contact us straight away if you are concerned your pet may have heatstroke.

Signs include panting, fast or difficulty breathing, lethargy, drooling/foaming, vomiting/diarrhoea, shaking, weakness, collapse and seizures.
