Morning everyone and happy bank holiday weekend!🥂
It’s that time of the year again when the dreaded conversation comes round🙈 and I’m just gonna start this by saying that in no way shape or form will the comments turn into an argument! So if you have anything to say just for a reaction don’t bother. They’ll just be deleted!🥰
⚠️ URGENT: Let's talk about dog heatstroke! ⚠️
With warmer weather around, it's vital we all understand just how dangerous heatstroke is for our dogs. It's not just "being a bit warm"; it's a life-threatening condition where a dog's body temperature rises to dangerously high levels, and they can't cool themselves down effectively. Unlike us, dogs don't sweat much through their skin; they rely on panting to cool down. If they can't shed that heat, their internal organs can start to fail, leading to serious illness, brain damage, or even death in a very short amount of time.
Symptoms can include excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhoea, staggering, or even collapsing. If you see any of these signs, especially after exercise or being in a hot environment, you need to act fast. Get them into a cool area immediately, offer small amounts of water, and gently wet them with cool (not ice cold) water. Never use ice water as it can cause shock.
Prevention is key! Always make sure your dog has access to fresh water and shade. Avoid walks or strenuous play during the hottest parts of the day. Never, ever leave your dog in a car, even for a few minutes, as temperatures can soar rapidly. If you suspect heatstroke, even if they seem to recover, contact your vet straight away. Early intervention can literally save their life. Stay safe out there everyone!
