Confused about attachment combs or grading combs? 👇 Here’s a simple guide:

The mm size tells you the approximate amount of coat left behind. The higher the number, the longer and softer the finish. Most attachment combs are used over a blade underneath, often a #10, #15 or #30, depending on the brand and comb system, so results can vary slightly.

3mm–6mm
Leaves a short, close, tidy finish. Best when you want a very neat result with less bulk left behind. These work well on fine, soft or regularly maintained coats. On thicker, fluffier or uneven coats, they can look much shorter and show more shape.

10mm–13mm
Gives a smart, even finish that still looks natural. A great middle-ground length for tidying and shaping without going too short. Best on coats that are in good condition and well brushed through first.

16mm–19mm
Leaves a softer, fuller and more blended finish. Ideal if you want to remove some bulk but still keep a fluffier overall look. Great for light shaping without a close clip.

22mm–25mm
Best for a very light trim and the longest finish. Perfect for neatening, blending and skimming over the coat while leaving as much length as possible. Usually gives the softest, most natural-looking result.

A few things to remember ✂️
• Fine, soft coats often clip more evenly and may look slightly shorter after trimming
• Thick, dense or fluffy coats can sit up more, so the finish may look fuller
• Curly, woolly or textured coats can leave a softer, less exact finish depending on prep and coat condition

Always start longer and work shorter if you are unsure.
