REMOVE THE CHAOS

Almost all dogs enjoy chasing things, but some breeds, developed for a particular kind of work, can become more obsessed than others.

Where some dogs will stop at chasing small objects like toys, for other dogs it can translate to anything big or small.

Sheepdogs are one of those breeds likely to chase after bikes, cars, animals or any other moving objects or person.

Stanley is an Old English Sheepdog who at just 6 months old is a pretty big boy. His owners noticed a change in his behaviour 2/3 weeks ago and rather than wait and allow the behaviour to manifest into something complex they contacted me. Issues were: Lead pulling and vehicle reactivity.

Today was all about creating that 2-way communication whereby there’s no confusion for the dog what they should be doing. Stanley wasn’t a difficult dog he just needed the appropriate guidance on how to behave whilst channeling his energy into something more productive.

Skylar came to me this morning with vehicle reactivity particularly towards bigger vehicles. Her owners thought her reaction was severe but it was actually pretty mild. But as trainers we don’t have to see a dog at it’s worst to help.

Today was very much about teaching a 6 month old, high energy Doberman to walk nicely on a lead adopting my follow state of mind. Skylar arrived on a Halti doing the usual 360 spins and bounding around just like you’d expect. She left walking perfectly to heel. By removing the Halti and using a slip lead (teaching her how to turn the pressure off) you could instantly see she was content in mind & body knowing exactly where she needed to be and what she needed to do.

By teaching Skylar how to be more attentive with a “follow” mindset on the walk, along with interrupting her intention to react at a meaningful level in a timely manner (consistently), we saw improvements rapidly. She understands she has a choice whereby she determines the outcome. React and receive a consequence or disengage and look to the handler for guidance and be rewarded.

We will be continuing our progress in other areas in the New Year. But for now, it’s just remaining consistent and practising everything she’s learnt today.

Check out the owners response to our session this morning. 🙌🏼

⭐️ Trained dogs are in the minority. ⭐️

Can you bet your dogs life on you having effective control whilst they’re off lead?

Open any social media platform and you will see more and more dogs being reported lost. Effective training and responsible ownership could prevent a large portion of them.
