⚠️ Acorn Toxicity ⚠️

🌰 We would like to remind our clients to take extra care with acorns this year. Acorns can be toxic, horse’s generally do not consume large amounts due to the bitter taste but some horses can develop a taste for them. Please remain vigilant especially due to a bumper crop this year.

Prevention:

🌳 If possible, remove horses off pasture where acorns have fallen heavily or fence off areas around the trees 🚧

🌾 Ensure supplementary feed is provided away from trees if forage is low.

Clinical signs to look out for:

😔🐴 Looking depressed or lethargy

🥕🐴 Off feed

💩 🩸 Blood in urine or faeces, diarrhoea

💤 Increased periods of lying down

Fiona and Christine recently volunteered their time to attend a BHS/BEVA Trust Education and Welfare Clinic at Ruthin Farmers Auction Co Ltd. BEVA - The British Equine Veterinary Association, The British Horse Society and World Horse Welfare were in attendance and we worked alongside other vets and nurses. We had 21 horses attend the clinic with 15 castrations, passports and microchips completed. These events are great for animal welfare but also a chance to support the development of younger vets. The team approach to the way everyone works at these clinics is inspiring, with younger colleagues being nurtured and supported despite the high volume and pressure of the work that needs to be completed on the day.
Thank you to Zoetis, Bransby Horses, Blue Cross, Redwings, World Horse Welfare and RSPCA for generously supporting the clinics.

***** Sweet Itch Vaccine *****
It’s that time of year again when we need to start thinking of how to help control sweet itch in our horses and ponies. This vaccine works really well and will make a big difference to how you manage them this year. Give me a ring or text to book in now.

******* Sweet Itch *******
It’s that time of year again when sweet itch is going to rear it’s ugly head.

Last year I vaccinated a lot of horses in the area with a vaccine that I imported and it had a great effect in reducing the itchiness of the horses and ponies.

It requires 2 injections, 2 weeks apart and that will last for the season.

Ring/message me now to book in. It is best done before the sweet itch season starts.
