Let’s talk about neutrality.
I get asked a lot what neutrality is and why it’s such an important skill for dogs to learn.
Neutrality is a dog’s ability to remain calm, engaged with their handler, and make good decisions around distractions — whether that’s other dogs, people, wildlife, food, or exciting environments.
Why is it important? Because neutrality is the foundation for so much of what we ask our dogs to do in everyday life. A dog that can stay calm and think clearly is a dog that can learn, listen, and engage wherever they are.
This video shows our puppy class practising neutrality at the weekend.
I wanted to keep Woody’s little jump in the video because it’s a perfect example of what training neutrality really looks like. It’s not about expecting perfection — it’s about building the skill over time.
Woody had been sitting beautifully for around five minutes before his impulses got the better of him. His owner stayed calm, simply asked him to sit again, and Woody settled straight back into position for another five minutes.
That’s training.
Not a dog that never makes mistakes, but a dog that is learning how to regulate themselves and an owner who knows how to guide them back to the right choice. Every repetition strengthens those skills, and that’s how neutrality is built. 🐾
Oh and wait… can we appreciate their heel work😉😎
