This is an issue that is creeping into our dogs lives.
Too much energy➡️crate
Visitors coming around➡️crate
Dinner time for us➡️crate
Can't settle➡️crate
Don't get me wrong, if a crate is introduced well and a dog loves their safe space then using for some of the reasons above is absolutely fine.
There's just some that over rely on them.
Training takes a back seat to confinement and that's the problem.
What about teaching to settle outside of the crate?
Mat work or a special area that they can chill out without relying on the crate so much?
Can you work on the excitement when visitors arrive?

Crates are a management tool.
A good tool when well conditioned and well loved.

Over using is a niggling issue I see slinking into a dogs life

In Brazil, a capybara became best friends with a stray puppy. The two were inseparable, swimming in the river together and napping in the shade. What fascinated locals was how the capybara guarded the pup at night, standing like a sentinel, its huge frame protecting the little dog from danger. The pair became a symbol of unlikely friendship. 😘😘😘

Sea otters have a unique habit of carrying favorite rocks in small pouches of loose skin under their arms.

These pockets act like built-in tool belts, holding both snacks and stones. Many otters choose one special rock they use for cracking open hard-shelled prey such as clams, mussels, and sea urchins, often keeping the same rock for months or even years.

The rocks can serve as hammers or anvils, showing how skilled sea otters are at problem-solving - a type of tool use that’s rare outside primates.

This behavior is especially helpful for female otters. Since they are smaller and have weaker bites than males, tools allow them to access energy-rich food that’s vital while caring for pups.

Young otters pick up these skills by watching their mothers, passing this knowledge from one generation to the next. Beyond survival, this tool use also plays a role in protecting ecosystems. By eating sea urchins, otters prevent overgrazing of kelp forests, which supports a wide range of marine life.

In short, sea otters don’t just use rocks to open shells - they help keep ocean ecosystems thriving.
