How K9 ORIGINS Operates During Warmer Weather
With the current heatwave, dog welfare has to come before routine.
At K9 ORIGINS, warmer weather changes how we operate. The dogs still need exercise, stimulation and structure, but not at the expense of their safety.
Once temperatures start going above 20°C, I begin reviewing whether sessions should go ahead, be shortened, adjusted, rescheduled or cancelled depending on the dogs booked in that day. Breed, age, fitness, coat type and individual tolerance all matter.
Here’s how we manage warmer days:
🌡️ Sessions reviewed above 20°C
Some dogs cope better than others, so decisions are made based on the dogs due out that day.
🚐 Transport times kept to a minimum
The less unnecessary time in the van, the better.
🐾 Each dog has their own crate during transport
No multiple dogs crammed into one cage. This helps reduce stress, prevents dogs from overheating each other, allows better airflow, and keeps every dog secure and settled.
💧 Fresh water always available
The dogs have access to fresh drinking water, plus two large paddling pools filled with clean water.
🌲 Private woodland field with natural shade
The field benefits from trees, shaded areas, cooler grass, and a higher elevation where we often get more moving air.
🐕 Low-energy activity when needed
In higher temperatures, sessions are slowed right down. More sniffing, shade, water breaks and calm movement. Less chasing, running and high-energy play.
Some sessions may be cancelled or changed at short notice during extreme heat, and I appreciate everyone’s understanding when that happens.
At the end of the day, this is simple:
Dog welfare comes first. Every time.
