An African Tawny Eagle was recently presented to our practice following a severe leg injury, where diagnostic imaging confirmed a fracture requiring orthopaedic intervention.
Following assessment and stabilisation, our veterinary team performed advanced orthopaedic repair surgery to stabilise the fracture and maximise the bird’s chance of recovery. Procedures such as these require meticulous planning, specialist equipment, and careful anaesthetic monitoring due to the unique anatomy and physiology of avian species.
The Tawny Eagle is a powerful and majestic bird of prey native to Africa, and it was a privilege for our team to be involved in its care. Post-operative recovery has been closely monitored, with pain relief, supportive care, and rehabilitation forming an important part of the treatment plan.
Cases like this highlight the breadth of expertise available within our practice. While many people associate orthopaedic surgery with dogs and cats, we are also able to perform complex surgical procedures in a wide range of exotic species, including birds, reptiles, and small mammals.
Our facilities include advanced digital imaging, modern surgical equipment, and dedicated exotic animal wards, allowing us to provide high standards of care across multiple species.
We are proud to support the treatment and rehabilitation of exotic and wildlife patients whenever possible and remain committed to advancing the care available for all animals — no matter how unusual the species.
