We’ve had a few rainy days here at the centre, and Leo here has clearly enjoyed it, rocking a new feathered hairstyle! 🦉
The long-eared owl gets its name because of two little feather tufts on top of their head, nothing to do with their ears or hearing! The tufts, known as plumicorns, can break up the outline of an owl’s silhouette, making it harder for them to be spotted when camouflaging amongst trees! Leo here is demonstrating that these are indeed nothing but feather, easily flattened down with a little rainfall !🌧️
