We’ve had a few rainy days here at the centre, and Leo here has clearly enjoyed it, rocking a new feathered hairstyle! 🦉

The long-eared owl gets its name because of two little feather tufts on top of their head, nothing to do with their ears or hearing! The tufts, known as plumicorns, can break up the outline of an owl’s silhouette, making it harder for them to be spotted when camouflaging amongst trees! Leo here is demonstrating that these are indeed nothing but feather, easily flattened down with a little rainfall !🌧️

Rogue keeping her eyes on the prize!

Birds of prey have excellent vision and can see at great distances, see more colours than we do and are extremely motion sensitive. All these factors make them incredible hunters!

When first hatched, kookaburras will have a hooked bill, diminishing as they grow up. Studies have shown that, even as new hatchlings, kookaburras will use this hook to attack other siblings in the nest. There are varied ideas as to why they do so, but it can be very common among chicks that hatch close together, with multiple birds attempting to establish dominance.

Two young kookaburras can lock beaks with each other and fight around in the nest with extreme intensity, so much that it often results in the death of a sibling. This behaviour typically takes place when their is a shortage of food coming into the nest which encourages competition between the chicks.

The Chestnut-Fronted Macaw is a smaller species of parrot sizing around 45cm, half of which is just his tail! They will often be spotted flying around in smaller flocks and during the breeding season can be seen side-by-side with their partner!

Found mainly throughout parts of South America (Panama, Ecuador and Colombia for example) and introduced into parts of North America, these birds are a beautiful display of tropical colours, with the chestnut brown above their beak being a highlight, identifiable feature and the reason for their species’ name. Additionally, the mixture of green, blue and red are perfect features for camouflage as you’ll often find these parrots inhabiting forested areas!

Due to their smaller size, these birds are typically more vulnerable to forest-inhabitant raptors or even species of snake including the Boa Constrictor.
To combat this, they have been known to next in tree hollows and cavities, granting extra covering and protection of young.

She might be small, but she is mighty 💪🏻

Mouse, our American Kestrel, is currently the smallest member of our flying team weighing in at around only 4oz.

These little falcons are speedy and agile thanks to their size! Their typical prey consists of insects (beetles, dragonfly, etc) however, they are capable of catching things up to the size of a European Starling!
