One of the most difficult aspects of owning any animal is coming to terms with saying goodbye. Making the decision to euthanise is often accompanied by a wide range of emotions, and at MBM, we strive to ensure our service is compassionate and supportive to our clients and their horses. We understand that speaking about euthanasia can be extremely distressing for many owners, so we have included some useful information below.

If there is anything we can do to help you and your horse, please do not hesitate to contact us or alternatively have a look at our website for more information - https://www.mbmvetgroup.com/equine/services/euthanasia

In the unfortunate event of an emergency, taking the immediate decision to euthanise the horse to prevent further suffering will take precedent over location. In most circumstances, you will be able to decide on the location of the euthanasia at home or on your livery yard in advance.

Hopefully, a quiet location in familiar surroundings will allow you to say your goodbyes privately. However, we must keep in mind the collection vehicle will need to access the area afterwards.

Keepsakes: Memories are important. On request we can take a clipping of mane, a tail plait, or pull a shoe for you as a treasured keepsake. Having the details organised ahead of time can help the process run smoothly.

Equine Recovery Services: We work closely with Equine Recovery Services, a small independent company dedicated to helping owners at the end of their horse’s or ponies’ life. They offer both routine uplift or individual cremation. More information can be found at https://www.equinerecoveryservices.co.uk/.

In the event of a planned euthanasia appointment, we can liaise with Equine Recovery Services to organise collection of the horse after the vet has attended. If you would like to enquire further about this, contact our office on 01563 522 701. Whilst we will help to set up this service as a courtesy to our clients, we are two separate businesses, and therefore, upfront payment is required for the collection aspect of the service prior to the appointment.

The source of equine grass sickness, a devastating condition whose cause has been undiscovered for more than 100 years, is though to be a neurotoxin produced by microorganisms in pasture.

The discovery could lead to novel treatments and improved diagnostics for the disease.

The neurotoxic enzyme which is thought to be responsible for the disease is also present in some snake venoms, suggesting that treatments in development for the effects of snake venom may be adapted for the recovery of horses affected by grass sickness.

Reporting cases is absolutely vital to our research. Data is power, and knowing the when, what and where of cases helps us identify the key risk factors.

Case reports are anonymous, and although we ask for the location, this is only used for research purposes, eg for assessing weather related risk, and we NEVER reveal locations to less than county level.

Cases are rife across the UK now, so please help our research and report your cases. If you know someone who has had a case please let them know they can report it.

💕 FOSTER MARE FOUND - thank you for all of your help 💕

Due to losing a mare through the night, a local breeder has been left with a 3.5 week old foal. Currently exploring options to bring another broodmare into milk but if by some chance there was a mare in milk available immediately this would be preferable option.

Central Scotland based. Willing to travel. Call 07463 736849 please.

⚠️ Be aware of the risks of laminitis. ⚠️
🌱The warmer weather, followed by the rain, has made the grass grow quickly over the last few days and we are getting lots of calls about laminitis.

ℹ️ Laminitis does not just affect overweight ponies, so all horse owners should be aware and understand the signs and take preventative measures.

❗️ Take your horse’s digital pulses daily, you will then know what is normal and quickly be able to spot when there is inflammation in the foot.

⚠️ Owners of horses suffering from EMS and Cushings should be extra vigilant.

➡️Clinical signs of laminitis:
• Shortened stride length especially on hard, rough ground
• Reluctance to turn
• Stiff gait – walking on heels
• Increased hoof heat
• Bounding digital pulses
• Reluctance or refusal to move
• Lying down unable to get up
• Pain on solar pressure
• Abnormal stance
• Signs of Pain: increased heart and respiratory rate, sweating, nostril flaring

🌱 It is worth noting that short, distressed grass (i.e. grass that is well grazed) that is trying to grow often contains more sugar and so the best preventative measure is restricted grazing, balanced with other controlled fibre in the diet, exercise (where physically possible) and the use of grazing muzzles (where appropriate).

🌱Grass doesn’t cause laminitis. 95% of laminitis cases have an underlying endocrine disease - EMS or PPID (Cushings).
