Not yet old enough or ready for a puppy class? Or can't commit to weekly sessions? How about a Puppy Home Visit!

If you have just brought home a new puppy and feel a little out of your depth, don't worry, it's normal PLUS I can help!! 😁
A puppy home visit is a 90 minute session where I come to your home (so no need to wait until vaccinations are completed) and you have a chance to ask all the questions on anything puppy related. Get advice on everything from toilet training, sleeping arrangements, crate training, home alone training, feeding, teething/play biting, exercise and play, socialisation, enrichment activities, kids and puppies and early training. You will also receive printable info sheets on everything discussed at the session.
Starting your puppy off on the right track can help prevent behavioural issues in the future.

To the dog that inspired me to become a trainer, the most handsome boy with the velvety ears, the one many of you have heard me describe as literally the best dog in the world! You were a huge part of our family and we'll miss your presence at home so much. 12 years was too short.

🤔 What is the difference between a Therapy Dog and an Assistance dog?

I often get asked this question by people who are wondering if their dog is suitable to be trained as an Assistance Dog or a Therapy Dog and the difference between the two, so I thought I'd draw up a post that explains just that!

🟣 What is an Assistance Dog?
An Assistance dog lives with their partner and has advanced public access training to ensure they are well mannered in the likes of shops, restaurants and various other public places where dogs aren't usually allowed. They are also specifically trained to do tasks that will mitigate the effects of their partner's disability or condition. Assistance dog examples are; guide dogs, hearing dogs, autism assistance dogs, mobility assistance dogs, medical alert dogs. A dog that is solely for comfort does not qualify a dog as an assistance dog. Assistance dogs are covered under many legislative access laws and are entitled to public access when working with their disabled handler. In Northern Ireland there are a few charities that provide fully trained assistance dogs to disabled handlers e.g. Guide Dogs for the Blind and Assistance Dogs NI, however you can also have your own dog assessed and trained (if suitable) by an independent professional trainer.

🟣 What is a Therapy Dog?
A Therapy Dog is a pet dog that is highly trained and enjoys interacting with people to provide affection and comfort within many different settings for example special schools, counselling sessions, care homes and more. Therapy dog owners can be volunteers who bring their therapy dog to visit people in a wide range of settings in which the team is welcomed such as schools, care homes, hospices, health care settings, court rooms, airports, basically anywhere they can provide emotional wellbeing to the client. Some therapy dog handlers are health professionals who will bring their accredited therapy dog to their private practice to support their clients as part of a paid for service. Therapy dogs are not covered under the legislative public access laws, and therefore do not have the same public access rights as an assistance dog and its handler, however they are usually warmly welcomed with agreement from the establishment they are visiting.

🟣 Training
Generally if you are considering a dog as an assistance dog or therapy dog, you need to start with the right puppy for the best chance of success in training them for the role. How the puppy is exposed to new and novel things, other people - adults and children, other dogs, other animals, different environments, noises and equipment can have a huge impact on their potential as a working dog. Exposure needs to be done correctly and done well without overwhelming the puppy or dog. The training process for a dog for either role is best started young, using reward based methods. These dogs need to be matured and certainly through adolescence to be able to mentally cope with the work.
Older dogs with the right temperament can also be assessed and go on to be trained to become a Therapy Dog or Assistance Dog if they are suitable for the role.

🟣 For an Assistance Dog, training should be of a high level and aspects of this training is tailored to the individual person who the dog partnered with. These dogs need to be calm, confident and well mannered. Assistance dogs are generally required to be at least 18-24 months old before accreditation.

🟣 Training for a Therapy Dog should also be of a high level and they should definitely be happy in the company of a wide range of environments and different people. Therapy dogs are not trained to assist their handler but they can be trained to do simple tasks that will give enjoyment and comfort to those they are visiting or supporting. Again, a Therapy Dog should be at least 18 months old at accreditation.

ℹ️ Best Practice
For the mental wellbeing of any Therapy dog or Assistance dog and for the safety of the people they work with, best practice is that the dog is through the adolescent development stage and fully matured and is a minimum of 18 months old before working with the public. They should have been trained without the use of aversive methods or equipment.

A little Christmas advice for dog owners!
Everyone wants a Merry Christmas and we definitely don't want a Christmas vet visit!

So keep in mind - as well as many foods we eat at Christmas that our dogs definitely shouldn't, e.g. chocolate, mince pies, Christmas pudding etc, it's also worth noting that some of the traditional Christmas plants that we often have in our homes in pots, table arrangements and wreaths can actually be toxic to dogs too if ingested!

Take care around plants like; Poinsettia, Holly, Mistletoe and Ivy. Plus chestnuts, pinecones and pine needles can also be a hazard if swallowed as they can cause choking or damage to your dog's stomach.
