Barren Ewe Check
Have you undertaken a barren ewe check? ๐ค๐
The cause of ewe abortion is often due to an infectious agent during pregnancy - toxoplasmosis and chlamydia abortus (Enzootic Abortion of Ewes (EAE)) are the main culprites. Has become towards the end of lambing, take a moment to look at your barren and abortion rates (we can help with this) has anything > 2% barren and 3% abortion is likely to be due to an infectious agent and should be investigated.
Where aborted material is not available, we can take bloods within four months of lambing from aborted or barren ewes. There is funding for this, therefore even if you didn't have many abortions during lambing but had more barren ewes at scanning it's a good idea to get it checked.
This can be used for the Animal Health and Welfare Review follow up. Please contact us and speak to one of the vets to organise the next steps.
