Barren Ewe Check

Have you undertaken a barren ewe check? ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ‘

The cause of ewe abortion is often due to an infectious agent during pregnancy - toxoplasmosis and chlamydia abortus (Enzootic Abortion of Ewes (EAE)) are the main culprites. Has become towards the end of lambing, take a moment to look at your barren and abortion rates (we can help with this) has anything > 2% barren and 3% abortion is likely to be due to an infectious agent and should be investigated.

Where aborted material is not available, we can take bloods within four months of lambing from aborted or barren ewes. There is funding for this, therefore even if you didn't have many abortions during lambing but had more barren ewes at scanning it's a good idea to get it checked.

This can be used for the Animal Health and Welfare Review follow up. Please contact us and speak to one of the vets to organise the next steps.

May Welcomes Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month

We want to take this opportunity to say a huge Thank you to our wonderful nursing team.

Our Vet nursing team care for your pets as if they were their own. Alongside providing patient care, they monitor anaesthesia, run laboratory tests, place cannulas, ensure clinical areas are kept clean and hygienic to name just a few of their roles. Just remember in human health care you would have a different person to do each of those things.

We will share some vet nurse related information with you over the coming month so keep your eyes peeled.

Cow Vital Signs

What are we looking for when assessing a cow's health? These are some of the things that should be at the top of your radar when deciding whether to seek vet advice or not.

Behaviour - abnormal, not eating, hanging back, less responsive.
Temperature - normal temperature around 38ยฐc
Respiratory rate - a normal rate is between 26 - 50 breaths per minute.,
Body condition score - thin or fat?
Rumination - a healthy cow will spend 6 h ours chewing the cud.
Coat and skin - patches of hair loss.
Mobility - are they walking comfortably on all four feet?
Udder - any signs of mastitis? Pain, heat, reddening, swelling?
Sunken eyes - a sign of dehydration.

There are many other things to look out for but these are the key areas to keep an eye on.

This week, weโ€™re celebrating the incredible people who are often the very first voice you hear and the first smile you see when you visit us ๐Ÿ’œ

Our Veterinary Receptionists are the heart of the front desk - juggling phones, comforting worried owners, coordinating busy diaries, and keeping everything running smoothly behind the scenes.

Their kindness, patience and organisation make such a difference to our team and to every client who walks through the door. We truly couldnโ€™t do it without them.

Thank you for everything you do - not just this week, but every single day. Happy Veterinary Receptionist Week! ๐Ÿพโœจ

WHEN SHOULD I VACCINATE AGAINST BLUE TONGUE?

We are facing an uncertain year, but it is probable that the Bluetongue virus(BTV-3) will continue to spread within livestock dense areas in early summer.
This could significantly impact animal welfare and cause economic losses. Currently, vaccination is the only way to protect your stock and reduce risk on farm.

Contact us to find out how to protect your animals ahead of the high risk period.
