‼️☀️ Heat stroke warning ☀️‼️
For the next week we are expecting to experience very high temperatures. Whilst a lot of pet-parents may already have trips planned with their pooch, take a minute to think about whether it’s a good idea, or not.
Heat stroke can present as excessive panting or restlessness, these are the precursors to the devastating effects of heat stroke when not treated ♨️
Once a pet’s body temperature raises it’s difficult to cool them down to a safe temperature again without veterinary intervention, due to the excessive panting and high temperature the pet will be dehydrated and require intravenous fluid therapy with additional cooling techniques. Make no mistake, in some breeds heat stroke is fatal, and chances should not be taken 😞
Animals most at risk are:
‼️Bulldogs (French, English, pocket, XL,etc)
‼️All other brachycephalic breeds meaning anything with an exaggerated short muzzle (pugs, shih tzu, cavalier King Charles spaniel, chihuahua)
‼️Obese animals
‼️Brachycephalic cats (Persians mainly)
‼️Patients with pre-existing cardiovascular or respiratory conditions
What can you do?
💧Walk your pet before 9am and after 9pm when the sun hasn’t risen or has just set
💧 If the temperature is over 20 degrees don’t take them out on a walk just let them outside to do their business and come back in
💧 If you’re not sure about the temperature place the back of your hand to the concrete and see how long you can hold it, this is how their paws feel
💧 If you suspect your pet is suffering from heat stroke try to cool them immediately by using water on their paw pads, ears and remainder of the body while you transport them to a vets
We don’t make this post to scaremonger, it’s to inform people that although the sun is a great thing for us, it’s not for pets☀️
A dog won’t die from missing a few walks, but they could die from heat stroke 😞
If you suspect your pet has developed heat stroke please contact your nearest vets immediately ☎️
