Strangles update
Once the vet had diagnosed the livery pony with strangles we reported it to the council right away. Strangles is not a notifiable disease but we thought it was worth doing. The council came out this morning to assess our biosecurity efforts and they were very happy with what we are doing, and completely satisfied with the isolation area that the poorly pony is in. They assured us that there was no reason to close the riding school at this time as everything is far apart.
The owners of the pony are not the ones taking care of him at this time, he is being cared for in house by limited people so that the risk of the infection walking off and through the yard is minimal with the correct biosecurity measures. The two taking care of the pony are in separate clothes when with him and when on the yard.
The pony himself is thankfully doing really well, the symptoms are clearing up nicely. Liveries are also doing the proper checks. On the part of the yard that the infected pony was on all the other liveries are completely up to date with vaccines and aren’t showing any symptoms at this point.
Our riding school is still open. We have limited access to areas that clients can go in on the yard, we have provided disinfectant areas, we are ensuring clients do not interact with livery horses, and we are checking the riding school ponies constantly for symtoms. We are not forcing anyone into coming onto the yard for their lessons, it is a choice that needs to be carefully thought of. We are doing everything on our end to keep the spread contained. We hope that those interacting with ponies outside of CRC do what’s right for their circumstances. If you have loan ponies, ponies on other yards, or know people with ponies that you see regularly, you need to ensure you’re not putting any other yards in danger.
Again, we will share more when we have the next set of information. BIG thank you to everyone who has helped our bio security measures run smoothly and of course a big thank you to PPM Print who delivered the warning posters we’ve dotted around the yard so quickly!
