It's been quite a week at Happy Tails Towers!
Nala our youngest dog started showing signs of being unwell on Sunday evening,This progressively got worse by Monday afternoon a visit to the vets was arranged.
The vets couldn't pin point exactly what was wrong so it was decided that the best course of action was to start a course of pain relief and anti-inflammatory medication,Unfortunately Nala continued to deteriorate over the next day or so to the point where she was struggling to stand & breathe correctly by Tuesday evening which resulted in a dash to the emergency vets in the early hours of the morning for Nala.....I genuinely didn't think she had survived the short 5 minute journey to Eden vets as she was completely unresponsive by the time I arrived there!
The team @ Eden Vets in Shavington were absolutely amazing and took action as soon as we arrived putting Nala on oxygen and without a doubt keeping her alive although we were told to prepare for the worst as she was very very poorly.
After a couple of days in the animal hospital @ Eden vets Shavington they have been amazing and managed to diagnose Nala.....She has Addison's disease which is a life long but not life limiting condition and can be managed with daily medication and a monthly injection.
At such a young age of 2.5yrs old we were completely not expecting this as Nala has shown no signs of this illness prior to Sunday and before that was the typical Cockapoo causing absolute chaos and winding up our other 2 dogs at every given opportunity!
Fortunately for us Nala is very well insured which means we don't have to worry about the ongoing cost and were not faced with a decision on her future to be made based on finance,Her stay in hospital was around ยฃ1,500 and her ongoing medication for life will be around ยฃ250pm ( ยฃ3,000) a year.....Many people without sufficient insurance would have to face the reality of whether this was sustainable for them.
PLEASE CHECK YOUR PET INSURANCE,
Make sure your pet is covered for "ongoing" or "lifetime" cover as many insurance policies do not and only cover for the year from diagnosis onwards.
Fast forward 2 days and she's back at home with us and although very tired she's almost back to her old self,We are very grateful to the team @ Eden Vets in Shavington and would highly recommend them.....Without a doubt they pulled her back from the brink of death and saved her life!
This post is just a warning for all...Please check your insurance policy covers all eventualities,Pay the extra few pounds a month if your current one doesn't it may well save you from a very difficult decision at the worst possible time!!
Looking forward to a quiet week ahead before the chaos of Christmas with
4 kids,3 dogs...Thankfully!,and a cat brings!!
