Can We Really Recognise Pain in Dogs?

This new study by Gardeweg et al. (2026) confirms something many of us working in canine therapy see regularly—pain is often recognised when a dog limps, but much less when it shows through behaviour.

In the study, 647 people were asked to identify signs of pain in dogs.

Most people easily recognised movement-related pain such as limping, stiffness, or reluctance to move.

But behavioural signs were far less likely to be recognised, including:

• changes in sleep
• reduced play
• clinginess or shadowing
• reduced sociability
• lower tolerance
• difficulty settling
• restlessness at night
• grooming changes
• personality changes
• mood changes

Even experienced dog owners were no better at spotting these subtle signs than non-dog owners.

This is important because chronic pain rarely starts with obvious lameness.

Often, the first signs are small changes in behaviour.

Things like:

❗ “He seems grumpier lately”
❗ “She doesn’t want to play as much”
❗ “He follows me everywhere now”
❗ “She struggles to settle at night”
❗ “He seems less tolerant than usual”

These are often dismissed as behaviour problems, ageing, or just “slowing down.”

But sometimes, they are early signs of pain.

By the time obvious lameness appears, compensation patterns, muscle tension, and long-term discomfort may already be well established.

Pain doesn’t always look like limping.

Sometimes it shows up in the quiet changes first.

Recognising those signs earlier means earlier support, better welfare, and better long-term outcomes.

❌ MYTH: "Prescription pain relief will destroy my dog's liver and kidneys, so it’s safer to avoid medication and stick to natural alternatives."

✅ FACT: When prescribed and monitored under veterinary supervision, modern pain medications are safe, highly effective, and life-changing. Unmanaged chronic pain is far more dangerous to your dog’s welfare and longevity than properly managed medication.

While every pharmaceutical carries potential side effects, modern veterinary analgesics (such as NSAIDs and targeted monoclonal antibodies) undergo rigorous safety testing. Routine monitoring - such as baseline blood and urine panels every 6 to 12 months - allows your vet team to ensure medications are being metabolised safely and catch any subtle changes well before they become clinical issues.

Leaving joint pain unmanaged out of fear carries massive, hidden risks: severe muscle atrophy, persistent neuroplastic pain ("wind-up"), mobility loss, anxiety, and ultimately a drastically reduced quality of life.

High-quality supplements and lifestyle changes are fantastic supportive tools, but they cannot replace the targeted anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving power of prescription medication when chronic joint disease is present.

We've been having a CrAzY week moving to Crewe!🏡

Our services have changed a bit and tbf I'm focusing on what my wee man need from me in these stressful days vs what services will change or stay.
My dog, cats and family come first so please bear with me as we all settle in and get our sh*t together.

In the meantime, here's a pic of my little super hero enjoying his new bigger, safer garden where he and I are both enjoying the peace of living without fear... IYKYK

Pain doesn't always look like limping or crying out.
A back or neck injury won't usually present with limping...🤦‍♀️
And even if it did, WHY would you wait for it to get that bad to seek treatment? 🤔

❌ MYTH: "My dog only needs pain medication on the days they seem stiff or limping."

FACT:
Osteoarthritis is a chronic, progressive inflammatory disease, not just a bad day here and there. Giving pain relief on an "as-needed" basis leaves pain unmanaged on the days between doses, allowing inflammation to flare up and joint stiffness to build back up.

In addition, intermittent treatment makes it harder to prevent wind-up pain (central sensitisation), where the central nervous system gets stuck in a hyper-sensitive pain loop. Consistent, long-term pain management, under the guidance of a vet, keeps baseline inflammation under control so your dog maintains steady mobility and comfort every single day.

We are officially in the process of moving-EEEEK!!
Hence the lack of posts, but as we get into another week of heat from hell, grab your art supplies and have a go at making a licky-art for a low-impact brain-game to keep your pooch occupied in lieu of a walk.
Dogs die from heat, NOT from missing a walk ;)

Myth: "Integrative therapies like hydrotherapy or clinical massage are just optional 'luxury spa treatments' for dogs."

THE FACT: They are essential, evidence-backed medical interventions. Arthritis may begin in a single joint, but it quickly becomes a whole-body disease. Because dogs naturally alter their posture and movement patterns to shift weight away from chronic pain, they develop severe secondary muscle soreness, tension, and joint stiffness elsewhere.

The Takeaway: Physical therapies don't just pamper a companion; they actively manage this compensatory pain, improve lubricating joint fluid movement, and safely preserve functional range of motion to slow down structural declines.
