We are appealing for information following a sheep worrying incident on Sunday 2nd April around the quarry area on Clerk Hill Road, Sabden near to Whalley Golf Club during which a sheep had it’s throat savagely ripped out. The injuries are too graphic for us to upload a picture.

We are particularly interested to speak with two ladies who were seen close to the area shortly before the dead sheep was discovered. The ladies are described as being aged in their 20’s walking dogs described as dark or tan colour bull dog type dogs. We believe these ladies were again seen in Wiswell one getting into a red car this time without the dogs.

If you have any information that will help us identify those involved please contact us via [email protected] or via calling 101 quoting log number LC-20230402-1026.

In this past week we have seen a sharp rise is dog attacks on sheep. The Dogs (Protection of Livestock) Act 1953 makes it an offence for a dog to worry livestock on any agricultural ground and that the person in charge of that dog shall be guilty of this offence if their dog attacks livestock, chases livestock in a way that could cause injury or suffering or in the case of females abortion of their lambs or lastly being at large (not on a lead or otherwise in close control) in a field or enclosure in which there are sheep.

We have had to deal with a lot of otherwise law abiding people in the past after their dog has committed attacks on livestock and at times are left with no option but to prosecute these owners due to the seriousness of the attack leaving them with a criminal record. These attacks are not only limited to larger more aggressive breeds of dog, we have attended reports of fatal attacks by dogs as small as French Bulldogs and we often hear from owners that they never believed their dog would be capable of such attacks and had never displayed any aggressive behaviour before. If you are walking a dog in and around agricultural land please just take a minute to consider what livestock may be around and if in any doubt at all put your dog on a lead.

* A Recent Rise In Kennel Cough - Know The Facts! *

We have recently seen a rise in the number of kennel cough cases, so we thought we'd take the opportunity remind everyone of the symptoms and how to help prevent the spread of this infectious respiratory disease. If you suspect your dog has signs of Kennel Cough please do not hesitate to contact us.

What is Kennel Cough?
Kennel Cough which is also known as canine infectious tracheobronchitis, is an airborne infection that spreads when dogs come into close contact with each other. This disease is particularly prevalent in a Kennel environment, hence the name Kennel Cough. Please be aware, it can also spread to humans - particularly those that are immunosuppressed.

Symptoms:
Signs of Kennel Cough generally appear three to four days after the dog has been exposed, however it can be as late as 8-10days.

Each case is unique and not all of our companions will exhibit they same symptoms.

The main symptom is the dreaded cough. The disease affects the protective cilia lining of the trachea, larynx and bronchi. When this occurs, irritation causes coughing. The cough can range from a mild cough to persistent, dry and hacking type coughs.

Other symptoms can include:

Lethargy
Restlessness
Not wanting to eat
Running nostrils
Conjunctivitis and eye discharge
Excess saliva around the corners of the mouth

Treatment:
If your dog has been diagnosed with mild kennel cough and is still active and eating well then typically no medication is required and symptoms will improve within around 5 days and completely recover within 10 days.
If a dog presents with more severe signs of the disease such as fever, difficulty breathing and a congested cough then treatment will be required. Young, Senior and immune suppressed individuals are likely to be more susceptible to these problems and in some cases antibiotics maybe given to treat the issue and possible secondary infections.

Prevention:
A vaccine is available for the Bordetella virus. This is recommended for dogs that frequently go to kennels, doggie day care, training or events where there will be a high population of canine companions.

It is worth noting, the vaccine is a live vaccine therefore you will need to make sure at least two weeks have passed between having the vaccine and taking your dog to kennels or training.

It is important to note that although most cases of kennel cough are caused by Bordetella, some are caused by other agents so the vaccine may not always prevent your dog from catching the disease.

NO DOG WALKING!!
If your dog has been diagnosed with kennel cough it is important that they not only get some rest but they also aren’t able to spread the infection (Treat it like COVID!). Therefore we recommend not meeting up with other canine friends or walking them whilst they are in recovery.

If you have any questions or are concerned at all, please contact us on 01282 930 190.

⚠️ Warning: shocking images⚠️

We're appealing for information after a kitten from Failsworth, Greater Manchester came into our care with multiple burns and a head injury. After being assessed, it was clear the burns were of different ages so we believe he had been abused on several occasions over a period of time. Help us find who did this ➡️ https://bit.ly/3CPSmRj

Odin is a lovely young kitten who is looking for his new forever home. He hasn’t had a good start to life and comes from a home with over 70 cats! He was also born with only one eye but this certainly doesn’t hold him back and he has no ongoing issues. He is full of fun and loves to play. He could settle with another cat or a friendly dog once careful introductions have been made. You can find out more about him here 👉 https://bit.ly/2AI1oTE

Afternoon, your East Rural Task force would just like to make the public aware that is it is now coming up to lambing season. Therefore, please be aware that when walking your dogs on public paths through farmland to keep all dogs on leads and that they are your responsibility. Loose dogs can cause distress to sheep and during this time of year can cause the loss of the sheep's life and also the life of their lambs, both young and unborn. This is at great financial loss and is also emotionally impactful to farmers who spend many hours’ worth of time, effort and money to raise them. A sheep which is pregnant with two lambs for example is potentially worth £1000 towards their livelihood. Please also bear in mind that prosecutions for criminal damage could potentially be sought against any dog owner / walker causing loss of life to livestock by not having their dog under control, effectively being reckless as to whether damage (injury to the sheep) could be caused. Furthermore, the farmer does have an exemption under law to shoot any dog uncontrolled on farmland currently at threat to their livestock - providing various criteria are met. This however is an absolute last resort and farmers do not want to do this!

Please be considerate during this time, and this way everyone can enjoy the beautiful rural areas we have in the Rossendale Valley and Burnley area.

Stay safe.
