In this video i’m working on getting these two adorable chocolate labs Cody and Rex calmly out of the van so their owner can get them calmly out of the car without them jumping straight out as soon as the door opens.

This is especially important if you’re on a busy road, you have kids that also need to be kept an eye on, or if there are other dogs people or livestock around. It also starts off the walk nice and calm too!😁

Does any other dog walker/ trainer feel bad for deleting dog photos and videos 😅 I’m surprised I even have any storage left!

A small session of this exercise before each walk can help increasing engagement during the walk leading to less filling.

As you can see, each time that I stop, the dog realises I have stopped, looks at me, and I change direction, avoiding going in the same direction makes things a little less predictable and puts more focus on you as the dog walker!

Some people will tell you that putting a dog in a crate is cruel. “Why do you put them in a cage?” crates can be a great tool when used and trained correctly.

When a dog is trained to use a crate, they will learn that it’s a safe space where they can relax and go to sleep. It can keep them safe when you pop to the shop as they won’t have access to chewing things like charger leads.

However, using a crate, can be cruel when done incorrectly. If they are left in the crate for long periods of time, we’re not trained to be in the crane before putting them in the crate with the door closed.

In this clip, I’m working on one of the foundation steps of loose lead walking, engagement and positioning. By walking backwards and guiding each dog with a treat on either side, I’m encouraging them to stay close, focused, and in the correct position relative to me.

Walking backwards naturally draws the dogs toward me, which helps reinforce attention and reduces pulling. Keeping them on either side also builds clarity, so each dog learns where their “place” is during the walk.

This exercise uses positive reinforcement, rewarding the behaviour we want (calm, close walking and attention) so the dogs are more likely to repeat it. Over time, this builds into reliable loose lead walking going forward.

This is just one step in the process. Once the dogs understand positioning and engagement, we gradually transition to walking forwards while maintaining that same calm connection.

This method is based on operant conditioning (Skinner, 1938), specifically positive reinforcement, where behaviours followed by rewards are strengthened. It also taps into attention and reinforcement history, which are key components in modern reward based dog training (Hiby et al., 2004; Rooney & Cowan, 2011).

When a dog learns “wait”, they’re not just putting their body in a sit, they’re learning to pause, observe, and check in with you.

That’s far more transferable to real-life situations than an automatic sit.
