Max’s 3rd Birthday! 🎂

Max recently celebrated his 3rd birthday while staying with me for a petsit and although his mum was away, she made sure he still had a very special day. ❤️

With a gorgeous birthday cake supplied by his mum, a trip to the pet shop where Max got to choose his very own toy, and a fun-filled day of adventures, he certainly wasn’t short of birthday treats! 🥳🎁

And after all that excitement, there was only one way to finish the day… a nice lazy evening curled up on the sofa, which Max absolutely loves. 🛋️🐶

Happy 3rd birthday, Max! 🎉 Here’s to another year of adventures, treats and sofa time! ❤️

Breed Spotlight: The Italian Spinone 🇮🇹

I recently had the pleasure of pet sitting these two gorgeous Italian Spinoni, and I completely fell in love with them. They were affectionate, playful, incredibly gentle, and always ready for a cuddle!

A few fun facts about this wonderful breed:
✨ Originally bred in Italy as versatile hunting dogs, they’re known for working on both land and in water.
🐶 Despite their sporting background, they’re often calm and gentle in the home, making them wonderful family companions when their exercise and enrichment needs are met.
🧠 They’re intelligent and eager to work, but they’re also independent thinkers. They respond best to patient, positive, reward-based training.
👃 Their noses are incredible! Scent work, tracking games, and plenty of opportunities to sniff are fantastic ways to keep a Spinone mentally fulfilled.

One thing that really stood out to me? Just how affectionate they are. These two were happiest when they were close by, whether that was joining me on an adventure or curling up for a cuddle afterwards.

Every dog has their own unique personality, but these two certainly left a lasting impression on me. Thank you for letting me spend time with such beautiful souls. 🐾

Why did I reward both dogs?

Because both dogs made the right choice.
One of my Italian Spinone returned before the other, but they both responded to the recall. That means they both earned a reward.

It’s easy to focus on who got there first, but that’s not what I’m teaching. I’m teaching that coming back to me is always worth it.

The science behind this is straightforward: behaviours that are reinforced are more likely to be repeated. If your dog comes back and you don’t reward them because they weren’t the fastest, you risk making the recall less valuable in the future.

Of course, my aim is a prompt, reliable recall. That comes from gradually increasing distractions, practising in different environments, and rewarding generously when your dog makes the right choice.

🚨 My whistle is reserved as an emergency recall.
It always predicts the highest-value reward for that individual dog. For one dog that might be roast chicken. For another, a favourite toy or game. Every dog is different, so finding what truly motivates your dog is one of the most important parts of training.
A few tips for building a reliable recall:
🐾 Reward every successful return.
🐾 Build up distractions gradually.
🐾 Keep your emergency recall cue special.
🐾 Make coming back more rewarding than whatever your dog is leaving behind.

A reliable recall isn’t about expecting perfection—it’s about creating a long history of your dog learning that choosing you is always the best decision.

Evidence supports this approach. Positive reinforcement increases the likelihood that a behaviour will be repeated, and UK organisations including Dogs Trust, Blue Cross and PDSA all recommend consistently rewarding recalls and using exceptionally high-value rewards for emergency recall training. Research has also shown that reward-based training is effective for improving recall while supporting good welfare (China, Mills & Cooper, 2020, Frontiers in Veterinary Science).

Hi everyone, I'm Flik, owner of Flik's K9 Training. Alongside me, I have three trusted team members, making us a dedicated team of four passionate animal care professionals.

Together, we provide dog walking, pet sitting, pet taxi services, and dog training across Kent and the surrounding areas.

While my team members specialise in dog walking and pet sitting, I personally provide dog walking, pet sitting, and professional dog training services, allowing us to support dogs and owners with everything from daily exercise to behavioural and training needs.
