Addressing emotionally charged dog behaviour problems normally requires specific behaviour modification, practical training and above all, time and effort, but it is a journey that is well worth taking. Together with professional support from our Certified Dog Behaviour Consultant (CDBC) Al Rankin BSc (Hons), even the most difficult behaviour problems can be improved or resolved. Al is certified with the International Association of Animal Behaviour Consultants and an expert in addressing fears, anxieties and building confidence in dogs. He provides Dog & Puppy Training classes in Lisburn, Banbridge, Lurgan and Portadown, individual training within 30 minutes of Moira and Behaviour Modification Services throughout Northern Ireland.

🐾 Why do we use clickers in training?

1. They tell the dog exactly what they got right! The click marks the precise moment your dog performs the behaviour we want. Instead of waiting until they finish the behaviour and then rewarding them, we can say, “YES! That exact moment was brilliant!”

2. They improve communication. Dogs don't naturally understand our words. A click gives us a consistent signal that means: “That behaviour will earn you something good.”

3. They're incredibly precise! Your voice can change depending on your mood, distance or timing. A click sounds the same every time, making it a very clear communication tool.

4. They help dogs learn faster! When the timing of reinforcement is accurate, dogs can work out which behaviour earned the reward much more easily.

5. They teach owners about timing. This is a big one! We don't just train the dogs—we train the humans too. Using a clicker helps owners become more aware of exactly when they're reinforcing behaviour.

6. The click isn't the reward! The click is a marker. The reward follows it. Over time, the dog learns that hearing the click predicts something they value - usually food, but the principle can be used with other reinforcers too.

Clicker training isn't about making dogs dependent on a clicker. It's about building a really clear communication system and teaching both ends of the lead how powerful good timing and positive reinforcement can be.

This is Ravo - a stunning little boy! His owners wanted a little support with him as it had been a while since they had a young and active puppy. He is so clever and very quick to pick up new skills. No need to jump on anyone anymore - all he has to do is sit or lie beside us and he'll get lots of attention.

We also discussed sleep requirements and daily routines for pups, how to address nipping and then worked to develop a super fast response to his name and a recall cue.

Did you know your dog might actually hate head pats? 🐶

Many just tolerate it, but a hand coming out of nowhere right over their eyes can feel super threatening and invasive.

Here are the stress signs to watch for next time you reach for their head:

Duck and cover: They lower their head or pull away.

Whites of the eyes: You see the white parts (whale eye).

Lip licking: They lick their nose or lips nervously.

Yawning: Big yawns when they aren't even tired.

Pinned ears: Their ears go flat back against their head.

Aim for the chest, chin, or the sides of their neck. They will love you so much more for it!
