The down sideside of clipping 😪

Most of my clients/friends I have worked with, I have clipped their horses for many years. As such, I really get to know them, and get to know their character and quirks, and I develop a kind of unspoken connection with them

Tom was one of the very best! Everyone that knows me, knows that I love Thoroughbreds. I really loved Tom!!!

When I clipped Tom, I clipped on his terms! He was the ultimate character. A bit like his owner, he was cheeky, maybe sometimes grumpy( sorry Sammy, only joking😅) But when I got to know him, underneath his king of the yard personality, he was such a gentle and kind horse that was such a pleasure to work with. I love TBs for that reason.....they are expressive, smart, cheeky, and funny......every day is different with them.

It's heartbreaking when one leaves us 💔

I'll always miss Big Tom! Along with the others that have passed away over the years 😢

Tom was a legend, and treated as such! He had a big connection with his owners, and I'm sure the yard feels different without him!

Miss you big lad!

At the minute I am clipping a lot of Cushings horses and ponies that are struggling a bit in this spell of lovely weather

Due to the thickness of some cushings horses, washing is really a bit pointless, as it can be incredibly difficult to actually pe*****te to the skin, as the hair can be almost like a fleece. The bad thing for the horse, is that this doesn't let the heat or sweat out!! So they are very hot underneath, and all the salty sweat residue in there can be very itchy and annoying

If your horse has cushings, I will normally offer a morning appointment. This is so that the horse will not be too warm or sweaty when I'm clipping & makes it easier. When they are warm and sweaty, they get very sticky, and any scarf etc mixes with this sticky sweat to create a glue like substance which just blocks up the blades

It's not always possible to get a very tidy clip on a cushings horse if it is sticky, but usually they are in little work and the clip is for practical comfort and welfare rather than cosmetic

Please book ahead when a morning appointment is required

PS......I would be interested to hear peoples opinions that have their horses on the tablet

⚠️Cushings Disease⚠️

I had the absolute pleasure of relieving this little older girl of her cushings fleece!

Normally she puts up a heavy winter coat, but sheds it off at this time of year, however the owners knew something was wrong when it wasn't shedding

She hadn't been clipped in 20 years, but stood like an absolute gem for me, even though it was a tricky clip

Normally I would use a coarse blade for a coat like this, but because it was so matted, I opted for a medium A2 to get underneath the coat which I found more effective

📢 Ergot & Chestnut trimming!

When I served my time as a groom, one thing we did regularly, was keep Ergots and chestnuts tidy

I have been mulling this over for a while, and feel this could really benefit a lot of my clients with Cobs and ponies!

The farriers used to trim them, but most farriers are so busy now that they don't really do it so much these days

Ergots and chestnuts don't really serve any purpose. They are brute ugly, and they are a real pain to clip around. It's almost impossible to get all the hairs around them!

What are they?

They are basically a kind of left over from the evolution of the horse. They are made up of calloused material, keratinized tissue. Similar to the hoof

In any case, after a lovely clip, they look horrible. Some splay out so badly that they resemble chicken claws!!!
