Have you ever wondered why your snow changes colour ?
Kittysitty Cat Behaviourist sheds some light on this phenomenon -
The Himalayan gene, responsible for the distinctive colour patterns in certain cat breeds, plays a fascinating role in the coat colour changes observed in snow Bengal cats as they age. This gene is temperature-sensitive, meaning that the expression of colour pigments in the fur is influenced by the cat’s body temperature.
In cats with the Himalayan gene, such as snow Bengals, the cooler parts of the body develop darker pigmentation. When snow Bengal kittens are born, they usually have a uniformly light coat because the warmth of the mother's womb keeps their body temperature consistent, preventing the expression of the darker pigment. As they grow and are exposed to cooler environmental temperatures, the cooler areas of their body, such as the ears, paws, tail, and face, start to develop darker colors.
This process is similar to what is seen in other breeds with the Himalayan gene, like Siamese and Himalayan cats. In snow Bengals, this results in a beautiful contrast between the darker extremities and the lighter body, creating their characteristic snow-like appearance. The extent and pattern of these colour changes can vary, but generally, as the cat ages and its overall body temperature regulation changes, the darker pigments become more pronounced.
Understanding the Himalayan gene helps explain the unique and ever-changing beauty of snow Bengal cats, making them a favourite among cat enthusiasts who appreciate their dynamic and striking appearance.
