PLEASE BE AWARE!!

There has been case of Leptospirosis, possibly caught from Fillongley Park. Despite being L4 vaccinated, the dog has become very unwell.

Leptospirosis is usually caught from dogs playing or drinking in water where rats have peed, but it can also be transmitted by contaminated soil. It is not just transmitted by ingesting it, it can be transmitted by entering cuts and grazes.

Symptoms of Leptospirosis is lethargy, vomiting, reduced appetite and yellowing of the gums. If you suspect your dog has Leptospirosis please seek Veterinary help, if left untreated it can be fatal.

I would advise to keep a very close eye on your dogs when out on walks and avoid letting them play in any water.

Some sound advice below regarding Adder bites 🐍 worth reading just in case.

🐍 Adders 🐍

With the glorious weather recently, we have seen an expected increase in calls regarding adder bites.

The adder (Vipera berus berus) is the only venomous snake native to the UK, and is also found across northern Europe. It is a protected species in the UK. Adders are most commonly, but not exclusively, found on dry, sandy heaths, sand dunes, rocky hillsides, moorlands and woodland edges. The clinical signs of an adder bite can include rapid and progressive swelling around the bite site, pain, lethargy, vomiting, bruising, bleeding and collapse.

What should you do if your pet has been bitten by an adder?
❌Do not panic.
❌Do not interfere with the bite.
❌Do not apply a tourniquet.
❌Do not attempt to touch or catch the snake.
❌Do not kill the snake – it is a protected species.
❌If practical, carry your dog to your car and go to your veterinary surgeon - do not delay seeking advice even if your pet is well as things can change quickly.

Adders are not aggressive and generally only bite when provoked. They hibernate in the winter and as a result most bites occur in the summer. Pets are frequently bitten on the leg, head or neck. If your pet has been bitten by an adder (even if you did not see the snake or are not sure what happened) – contact your vet immediately. Your vet will examine your pet to determine the location of the bite and extent of the swelling.

Veterinary professionals can call us any time on 02073 055 055 if required for assistance with managing cases of adder bites. We also hold a list of antivenom stockists across the UK. Please note that antivenom is not indicated in all cases.

Getting messages like this means the world🥰 It turned out this said lump was cancerous, and was worth me advising to seek a 2nd opinion.

Whilst grooming your dog, I also do a thorough health check. I have the opportunity to put my hands all over them and whilst drying see past the hair and to their skin checking for any changes, lumps or bumps or skin changes, that sometimes go unnoticed at home.

Another Border Terrier in this week for their spring strip.

You don't have to wait for warmer weather to strip your Terriers. One way to tell if your dog needs stripping is if they are extra itchy, rubbing up your furniture or rolling around on their backs.

New pup to the den, Benji 🥰 testing out my 2nd most expensive purchase for a single item from Crufts, the Doglymat, providing more comfort for your pooches whilst on the table.

I have limited space on my books for new clients. Unfortunately, I am no longer taking on dogs larger than 22kg, unless it's a smooth coat deshsed or short haired German Shepherd or Husky etc. 🐾

Newest pup to the Den, Teddy.

As with all pups Teddy requires more desensitising to the process of grooming. You could tell that Teddy has had plenty of baths and blow drying at home, as this didn't phase him at all. However, he needs a bit more exposure to the sound of the clippers and trimmers, which is totally normal, and why regular grooming as soon as possible is always recommended. So, Teddy went home with a little homework and I will see him again in four weeks for another puppy groom. 🐾

I Just want to clarify that I find the recent TikTok videos and reels doing this completely disgusting. I would never treat any of your pets with such little respect. Their comfort and welfare is always my first priority.

Seeing groomers blast a high-velocity dryer in a dog's face like it's some kind of joke? Not cute. Not funny. Just stressful and dangerous. If you think this is acceptable, you need to rethink how you handle dogs. And honestly, you’re exactly the kind of person who needs proper grooming education. Dogs deserve better. Do better.
