Thereā€™s something about the 1st of May that makes you stop and look backā€¦

Winter.

ā€œbloody hellā€¦ we made it.ā€ šŸ˜…šŸ“

Because winter for us isnā€™t just a seasonā€¦
itā€™s an endurance test.

ā€¢ frozen taps
ā€¢ mud that tries to claim your soul
ā€¢ headtorches and late-night checks
ā€¢ riding in the dark (or not riding at all)
ā€¢ endless layersā€¦ that still arenā€™t enough
ā€¢ questioning every life choice at least once a week šŸ¤£

Itā€™s showing up when itā€™s cold, wet, miserableā€¦
when motivation is low
when everything feels harder than it should

And yetā€¦

You still went.
You still mucked out.
You still checked them, fed them, worried about them, cared for them.

Thatā€™s not small.

Thatā€™s commitment.

And now?

The grass is coming through šŸŒ±
The evenings are lighter šŸŒ…
The mud is mostly retreating (letā€™s not get cockyā€¦ this is the UK šŸ˜¬šŸ¤£)
The horses feel brighter
And so do we.

Thereā€™s this quiet feeling ofā€¦

ā€œWe got through it.ā€

Not perfectly.
Not gracefully.
But we showed up.

And honestly?

That counts for more than any perfect ride, rosette, or result.

There comes a day when the arena lights fade, the rodeo miles slow down, and the horse that once gave you everything finally gets to rest.

The truth isā€¦ those horses donā€™t owe us anything.
They already paid us back a thousand times over.

They carried our nerves to the alleyway.
They gave us the confidence to chase dreams we werenā€™t sure we deserved.
They forgave our mistakes, tried their hearts out, and never once said the ground was hard, the miles were long, or Iā€™m too tired.

They simply showed up for us.

And when the time comes that their bodies say ā€œIā€™ve done enoughā€, thatā€™s when our job truly begins.

Retirement isnā€™t the end of their story.
Itā€™s the chapter where we return the favor.

Itā€™s soft pasture, slow mornings, extra hay, and scratches in their favorite spots.
Itā€™s vet bills, feed, and care for a horse that may never carry a saddle again.

But thatā€™s the deal we make when we love them.

Because the horses that gave us the world in their youth deserve peace, comfort, and dignity in their golden years.

A good horse spends their life taking care of us.
