Barbers Pole Worm

Have you heard of FAMACHA scoring?
The best early warning system for haemonchosis (Barbers Pole Worm Disease) in sheep.
FAMACHA scoring is a simple colour-based check that you can do on farm to identify anaemic sheep.
Whilst many things can cause anaemia (less red blood cells in the blood), a key and deadly cause is the newly arrived worm to this area called Haemonchus. Haemonchus is a blood sucking worm that lives in the stomachs of sheep, as it does not cause scour and drinks large amounts of blood, a sudden death can be the first sign you see.
FAMACHA scoring is a guided system that rates the colour of the sheep’s third eyelid (see photo), to allow you to pick up early cases and act fast!
Get into the habit of checking the eyelids of a few sheep every time you handle them, familiarising yourself with what is normal for your flock (critical as some sheep naturally are paler than others), and being ready to stop Haemonchus in its tracks!
We recommend treating animals with score 4 or 5 (see image), for advice on which wormer to use please speak to a Parklands Vet.

🍁Disbudding Autumn Calves 🍁

The Autumn block calvers amongst you will be starting to get busy, if you're not already! This is a reminder to get your disbudding booked in - whether that's traditional or knock down.

Knock downs are great for larger groups, and often cost effective too - the more you do the cheaper it is. This also depends on whether there are other jobs to do at the same time, so worth checking in with your vet to discuss how we can make the job as efficient as possible.

If you haven't had knock down disbuds before but are interested, then please speak with one of our vets!

Barber Pole Worm (Haemonchus contortus) on the rise!

We have seen a sudden spike in clinical cases and deaths relating to Haemonchus contortus worms. Following a mild spring and summer, with warm weather followed by heavy rains it is vital to be clued up about Haemonchus.
It kills quickly and can be hard to spot; look out for animals that seem weak and pale or develop a “bottle jaw” swelling under their chin. Be vigilant even in animals without a scour/ that have been recently dosed.
Haemonchus lives in the last of the four stomachs and drinks blood from the ewe/lamb:
It can kill without ever causing a scour
All ages of sheep/goat can be affected
Not all wormers proving to be effective against it this year
When not dealt with it can overwinter inside sheep, causing sudden death next spring
In the past, Haemonchus would not have been a problem in this area but changing weather conditions mean that it is here and causing problems.

We have found not all wormers are proving to be effective against Haemonchus this year so contact a Parklands vet

💩 FEC Reduction Tests 💩

We're coming into the season of faecal egg counts (FEC) and identifying appropriate treatments. With this, we want to stress the importance of doing a Reduction test following parasite treatment🦠
This involves a pre and post treatment worm egg count to identify if the treatment has worked 🪱
The "wait period" for the post wormer sample depends on the treatment given - we can help you with that.

If the post-treatment sample shows signs of parasites, then the treatment may have failed and we should seek an alternative option. This is increasing all the time with more and more resistance. Identifying the parasites of concern before treatment will help reduce this likelihood.

Please contact one of our branches to arrange some FEC Reduction tests.

🐏 Ram Testing Time🐏

Time to book in your annual MOT tests for your rams ahead of breeding.

In the clinical assessment, we will physically check the ram including teeth, testicles, feet and body condition to identify any problem areas 🩺
Following the physical exam, we will analyse a semen sample to ensure the ram is firing on all cylinders! 🔬

10 weeks ahead of tupping gives you time to sort any issues, therefore please call one of our branches to get booked in

🐑 Lameness in Sheep🐑

Be Proactive!
Ahead of tupping, you should be getting ewes to hit their prime and lameness needs to be factored in.

Treat individual animals as soon as you spot them and maintain hygiene at pasture (minimise the wet areas - this encourages footrot and CODD spread). Vaccination is often useful in addition to isolation and culling protocols.

Routine foot trimming in sheep is discouraged - unlike in cattle!
This is due to the contagious nature of the bacterium causing footrot and CODD.

If you're having continuous issues with lameness and struggling to get on top of it in the flock, then speak to one of our vets!

🌡️Heat Stress 🌡️

It's that time of year where we need to be aware of heat stress in our livestock 🐄
When temperatures hit 22 degrees livestock will start to exhibit signs of heat stress:
🌞 Lethargic
🌞 Inactive with their heads bowed
🌞 Panting
🌞 Stand in tight groups

However, this is based on 60% humidity which is the UK average. If we take into account different humidity levels plus ,Amy other factors such as bedding type, breed, system, wind speed etc this temperature threshold form heat stress can reduce dramatically.

Keep an eye on your livestock and be prepared with cooling systems.
