Dear all,

Please read the following, especially if you think you may have a new cat, rabbit, duck, chicken litter/brood arriving before any bookings.

A friend, a fellow dog walker / pet carer, is currently experiencing a horrible week.

When she arrived at a recent booking, she was told beforehand, (but not long beforehand) that there were newly hatched chicks and ducklings.

Also their rabbit had not long had a litter.

First day or so, no problems. Then the mother rabbit was found deceased with 6 three week old kittens remaining.

This happened over the weekend. Now even though my friend is probably more trained than me (previously a vet assistant), she asked out for help.

The owners were contacted on holiday (this is why we always need an emergency contact number) and they arranged an Amazon Prime urgent delivery of baby rabbit food etc. But what to do in the meantime. Best she could do was to take the rabbits home with her and try and get some liquids in them. But what, when shops are closed at weekends.

I was stumped so I had to ask another friend.

Luckily she knew what to do but again getting the stuff was restricted due to closed shops.

Few days have passed, but unfortunately as I type even though hand fed every few hours day AND NIGHT, all 6 little ones have passed away.

My friend has gone well over what she was employed to do, and is now suffering a horrible emotional time, while running around doing her job on very little sleep.

The purpose of this is simple.

We (and she is changing her policy too) will NOT be looking after baby animals in the future, without the following.

a) we are informed well in advance
b) there is an emergency agreement setup up between us all and your vet.
c) all potential emergency supplies are available, especially for feeding

While we are currently on our 20th business year, we have never experienced this nightmare.

And in case it was to happen, we will need these protocols in place.

Your is paramount to the core of our businesses.
