Frontosa Burundi (Cyphotilapia frontosa “Burundi”) is a stunning freshwater cichlid native to the deep, rocky waters of Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. Known for its majestic appearance and relatively peaceful demeanor compared to other cichlids, the Frontosa Burundi is a favorite among advanced aquarium hobbyists.
Key Characteristics:
• Coloration: The Burundi variant of Frontosa is particularly prized for its bold black vertical bands (usually 6 or 7) that contrast sharply with its pale to bluish-white body. Over time, mature males may develop an intense blue hue, especially around the face and fins.
• Body Structure: These fish have a robust, stocky body with long flowing fins and a prominent nuchal hump (more pronounced in males).
• Size: Adults can reach up to 12–15 inches (30–38 cm) in captivity.
• Temperament: While relatively calm and slow-moving, they can be territorial, especially during breeding. They are best kept with similarly sized, non-aggressive Tanganyikan species.
• Diet: Carnivorous—primarily feeds on small fish and invertebrates in the wild. In captivity, a diet of high-quality pellets, krill, and occasional live or frozen foods is ideal.
• Tank Requirements: Needs a large aquarium with plenty of rocky caves for hiding and a sandy substrate. They thrive in stable water conditions: pH 7.8–9.0, temperature 75–80°F (24–27°C).
Notes:
• Frontosa Burundi are slow growers and can live 15+ years with proper care.
• They are substrate spawners, and breeding pairs form bonds over time.
• Keeping them in a species-only tank or with compatible Tanganyikan cichlids ensures best results.
Overall, the Frontosa Burundi is a regal showpiece for any large, well-maintained aquarium and rewards patient aquarists with its impressive beauty and intriguing social behavior.
