Some milestones are about more than travel. They’re about creating opportunities that once felt impossible. 🐾✈️

Autism assistance dog Barley recently supported his handler on his first holiday abroad with his family in Belgium!

They shared that a holiday like this simply wouldn’t have been possible before. It was the first time the children had been abroad and experienced a big family holiday.

As an ADI-accredited organisation, our dogs can support families beyond the UK too, helping make adventures, memories, and new experiences more accessible. 🌍💙

Thanks, Barley!

Our puppy sponsor updates are already making people smile 💙

One sponsor recently told us:

“Thank you for these heart-warming reports! It was such a cool and clever idea. I love to read them and they make me laugh every time.”

By sponsoring Mammoth, you can follow his journey as he grows, learns and takes his first steps towards becoming an autism assistance dog.

Toby and his handler recently enjoyed a day out at Manchester Airport Runway Visitor Park.

Places like this can be exciting, but they can also bring a lot to manage: noise, movement, queues, crowds, changes in routine, and plenty of sensory information.

For assistance dog teams, days out are not just about the destination. They are also about preparation, steady support, and knowing when to pause.

A few useful things to think about before a busy outing:

• Check accessibility information before you go
• Plan quieter moments into the day
• Pack water, treats, waste bags, and any essentials
• Keep plans flexible where possible
• Allow your dog time to rest before and afterwards
• Notice and celebrate the calm moments, not only the big milestones

Toby’s photo is a lovely reminder that confidence in public places is built gradually, with careful training, family preparation, and ongoing support.

What helps you or your family feel more prepared for a busy day out?

We are preparing to open applications for a new Foundation Programme catchment area on 1st June.

This application window will be for families based in:

Bristol, Bath, Somerset, Wiltshire and the Cotswolds

To help us manage programme capacity responsibly, this opportunity is only available to families in this catchment area.

The photo shows puppy Jack with his future handler. They are currently on the Foundation Programme and have shared that they are enjoying the journey so far, as they begin building that important bond together at home.

Further details and the application link will be shared soon.

You may remember our very own One Direction litter - Harry, Loui, Niall, Zayn and Liam 💙

After we introduced them, many of you asked the same question:

Can these puppies be fostered?

The answer is yes.

We are now opening this foster opportunity to the general public, for these puppies and for Shani, our beautiful black Labrador.

Fostering gives a puppy a safe, loving home while they grow, learn and experience everyday family life. It is an important part of their early journey as they work towards their future role as autism assistance dogs.

You will be supported by our team throughout, with guidance, advice and the essentials needed to help them settle.

If you could offer a temporary home and be part of a puppy’s journey, we would love to hear from you.

Warm weather has reached the farm, and some of our trainee autism assistance dogs have been enjoying water play to keep cool.

At Autism Dogs Charity, our dogs are trained to support autistic people and their families. Alongside their training, moments like this help build confidence, provide enrichment and give the dogs time to relax and enjoy being dogs.

Fresh water, shade, rest breaks and close supervision are always part of the plan.

Not every future assistance dog handler starts out feeling confident around dogs.

Autism assistance dogs are specially trained to support autistic children and adults with daily challenges, such as anxiety, sensory overwhelm, confidence, and routine.

Some handlers have grown up around dogs. Others have had very little experience, or none at all.

That is okay.

We do not expect an instant bond. We support each family step by step, with careful introductions, playdates, family training, and aftercare.

The handler may start by simply being near the dog, watching calmly, or joining in with small activities when they feel ready.

The dog’s wellbeing matters too, so everything is done at a pace that supports both the handler and the dog.

Confidence can grow gently, one small step at a time. 💙

When families begin their journey with us, they often hope assistance dog will support everyday moments that may feel difficult or overwhelming.

For one of our teams, Barley is now doing just that.

Since coming home, Barley has developed a beautiful bond with his young handler. Mum shared that they have become almost inseparable, and that his handler is now managing meltdowns and panic attacks with more calm, settling more quickly than before.

Barley’s support has also helped his handler feel more able to leave the house, access events and enjoy days out with his brothers. Mum says he is growing in confidence too.

These are the kinds of hopes many families carry into the programme: more calm, more confidence, more access to everyday life, and a trusted dog beside them through it all.

Well done to Barley and his family. We are so proud to see your partnership growing. 💙

A very warm welcome to our newest arrivals: Harry, Loui, Niall, Zayn and Liam 💙

Yes, it is our very own One Direction litter!

These beautiful puppies have now joined Autism Dogs Charity and are beginning the earliest stage of their journey. Over the coming months, they will be supported with careful socialisation, positive early experiences, routines, welfare checks and training foundations.

As they grow, each puppy will be guided with patience and care as they work towards their future role as an autism assistance dog, supporting autistic individuals and their families in ways that are tailored to each partnership.

For now, it is all about settling in, learning gently, and being given the best possible start.

Welcome to the Autism Dogs family, learn more and support us at our website autismdogs.co.uk 🐾💙
