Your Reactive dog does not want to be around lots of other dogs.
Instead give them space to observe and remain calm!!! 🐶🐾

This beautiful girl use to react to dogs and people when we started working together.

Here she is out and about with no reaction 👍

If your dog’s behaviour has become worse or you notice them suddenly showing more sensitivity to noises then it may be an indication that they are in pain.

I can’t thank Roger from Taylored Dog Training and Behaviour enough! After being let down by a previous puppy class and left with a reactive pup and no knowledge of how to deal with it. I decided to find a proper trainer who could help me with reactivity and found Roger on Facebook. His reviews were amazing!
Roger has spent the last 10 weeks training me to train Norah. We covered frustration, settling, heel work, jumping up and so so much more. Roger also came to our house and helped with some problems in the home.

One of our sessions was on sandbay beach (which I was dreading) but all the training just popped into place and she did amazing with lots of dogs around, birds and people. We were both very proud of her.

In the beginning I went from being tearful, fearing her whole life was going to be in secure dog parks or walks at silly o’clock when no one else was around and thinking that all the wonderful things I had dreamed of doing with her had gone out the window, to now knowing with time, my girl will be the best dog and for that I will forever be grateful to Roger’s expertise and his wonderful training programme.
THANK YOU SO MUCH ❤️

Just finished a session with this beautiful girl. This poor girl has not been on a walk since December, she was petrified when leaving the front of the house, she would try to go back home. This was our first session. 🐶🐾😃

Just had a great session with this gorgeous girl.
This was week six of my 10 week program. When we started she would become anxious and lunge and bark to drive the dogs off.
In the assessment I noticed she was weight bearing on her rear leg, she is now on pain killers which has drastically reduced her anxiety and reactivity.
This was outside the bark park with 7-8 dogs running around playing.
She is learning that if she is worried mum will supportbhe and move her away so she doesn’t need to lunge, bark or even hide.

Well done Vicki you guys are doing an amazing job with her. 🐶🐾🎉❤️

Check out this little beauty. 🐶
When we started she was lunging, barking and snapping at other dogs and lunging and barking at people.

This was her first time on the beach, she did so well no barking or reacting to people at all and very little reactions to other dogs.

I took the lead first to help calm her and lower her frustration and over arousal.

She loved playing tug and hunting for treats.

She then calmed and mum took over.
Mum did a great job and so did this gorgeous girl.

Well done Jo you aced it. 🐶❤️👍

Rada chews and sucks on a blanket to calm herself and fall asleep. She also loves to rip and shred the blanket.
I make sure she has blankets and toys to give her a much needed outlet.
If I didn’t give her blankets and stuffed toys she would eat the cushions and steal things off of the washing line.

The second picture was taken 5 minutes after.

Make sure you give your dogs an outlet for the behaviours they are trying to achieve.

Here is a few ideas.
Digging the garden, swap for a sand pit. Try hiding treats and toys for your dogs to find.

Ripping up your cushions, give a stuff toy for your dog to chew and destroy. Make sure they do not consume the fluff though.

Chewing on your wooded chairs, swap from some root wood or coffee wood.

Stealing clothes or towels, swap for a blanket that you have bought for your dog to destroy.
Give your dog lots of encouragement when they interact with the blanket.

My partner and I needed some help with our reactive german shepherd Lola on walks, and with her behaviour around our other german shepherd in the house. We completed the ten week course with Roger and we have learnt SO much from this.

Roger has taught us so many ways in which we can now read Lola’s body language, when she needs some space, when she’s frustrated, when she’s excited, and when she needs some support. Roger has helped us realise why Lola is getting frustrated and why she reacts on walks, and has given us loads of tips on how to help her through.

Roger’s one to one training, and pairs training was extremely helpful and he is full of knowledge when it comes to helping your dog be the best dog it can be. We’ve come so far with Lola and she is nowhere near as reactive as she used to be. She still has a way to go, but now we know how to move forward with the reactivity training on our own out and about, we know when she’s asking for support, and if we see another dog, how to react. Whereas before we really weren’t sure what to do.

The house visit was extremely beneficial too, and made us see where Lola’s frustration was coming from at home. Roger gave us some great tips for settling Lola and keeping her calm in the house, as well as how to calm her frustration and excitement before walks and in the garden.

Roger is amazing at what he does and we can’t recommend him enough!

Myth Buster Time
“Look at me”

Making your dog sit or stay by holding a treat in front of them or asking them to look at you to try avoid them reacting to a trigger is not going to change their behaviour or make them feel better about the situation.

Why?

Because your dog is eager for the treat that is being waved in front of them which can put them in a conflicting situation. They may feel trapped, worried, stressed or even frustrated and just want that darn treat but the trigger is getting closer and closer to them.

Instead give them space from the trigger and then reward the dog when they are feeling calm and able to listen to you.

5 Reasons Your Training for Your Reactive Dog Isn’t Working (And How to Fix It!) 🐶🐾

Training a reactive dog can feel like an uphill struggle- you take one step forward, and then two steps back. If you’re struggling to see progress, don’t get discouraged! Here are five common reasons your training might not be working and what you can do to turn things around:

1️⃣ Inconsistent Training – Reactivity training requires a-lot of practice and consistency. If you’re only working on it sometimes, your dog won’t fully learn what you’re asking.

2️⃣ Too Close to Triggers – If your dog is reacting, they’re too close! Give them space from the trigger to process so they can stay under their threshold so they can learn and make good choices.

3️⃣ Not Meeting Their Needs –If your dog isn’t getting the right balance of mental and physical exercise, this can lead your dog to become frustrated, stressed or over aroused.

4️⃣ Using the Wrong Rewards – To motivate your dog you need to find a reward that your dog deems of high value- whether it’s cheese, chicken, or a favorite toy—This can then be used to reinforce the behaviour you want.

5️⃣ Expecting Quick Fixes – Your dogs Reactivity isn’t a “bad behaviour that you need to punish; it’s an emotional response to a particular trigger such as dogs, people cars etc. Your dog will need time, patience, and consistency to help them feel safe and confident.

✨ The good news? With the right approach, progress is possible! Stay patient, celebrate small wins, and don’t be afraid to seek help from a professional if you need it.

We had Roger in our home to help us understand our dog's behaviour . He would bite you when guarding anything too value. Also he has anxiety to other dogs and people and barked a lot,Roger showed and trained us how to deal with these situations and build our confidence for us to continue to improve this. Dexter is a much happier and calmer. We would definitely recommend Roger Taylor he gives five star training.

Are you struggling with your dog’s behaviour and WISH you had a dog who listened to you?

We help frustrated dog owners with busy lives to change their dog’s unruly behaviour, communicate effectively and get real life results. By looking at a dog as a whole, and teaching owners how to train their dogs in a positive manner, not only can we change behaviour but we can build an unbreakable bond, and create a better life for the whole family.

Our mission is that every struggling dog owner gets to feel the joy and excitement of realising there is light at the end of the tunnel, and they CAN have the dog - and life - they once dreamed of.

Having owned dogs who were deemed ‘untrainable’, we understand how it feels to be lost, confused and at your wits end. Our empathy, knowledge and 20 years’ experience specialising in the field of behaviour, means our unique and realistic training programs get real life results for hundreds of dog owners each year.
