To grieve deeply is to have loved deeply…
One of the most painful things about losing an animal is how often people minimise the grief that follows.
“It was just a dog.”
“Just a cat.”
“You can get another one.”
“Are you still on about that ?”
But anyone who has truly loved an animal knows it is never just an animal.
For some people, the bond they share with their animals is deeper than many of the connections they have experienced with humans. Animals become part of our everyday lives, our healing, our comfort, our sense of home. They sit beside us through heartbreak, loneliness, change, and the moments no one else sees because we do not allow anyone else to witness that vulnerability.
So when they leave, the grief can feel enormous because the love was enormous too.
There is nothing irrational or “too much” about mourning a soul who was woven into your life.
Your grief is valid.
Your love was real.
You are allowed to grieve.
And the depth of your pain simply reflects the depth of the bond you shared.
