How do I know if it is the right time to put my pet to sleep?

This is a question we get asked all the time at REST and it is often a tricky one to answer as it is such a deeply personal decision and everybodyโ€™s situation differs.

As a veterinary nurse who has supported many clients through these difficult times, I always ask the client to consider the following factorsโ€ฆ

๐Ÿถ Quality of life = How is your pet overall? Do they still enjoy activities they once loved? Do they have more good days then bad days?

๐Ÿฑ Mobility = Are they able to move around comfortably? Do they struggle to walk/stand?

๐Ÿฐ Eating and drinking = Has their appetite reduced/increased? Are they getting enough nutrition?

๐Ÿถ Pain = Is their pain managed? Are they taking medications?

๐Ÿฑ Breathing = Is their breathing normal? Are they coughing or struggling to breathe?

๐Ÿฐ Treatment options = Have you explored all treatment options? Can we try a different treatment? Is their treatment affordable for you?

๐Ÿถ Impact on your life = Although most owners would do anything for their pets, when they become ill, it not only impacts your pet but also you too. Are you unable to leave them alone? Is it affecting your schedule? Are you having to rely on others for support? You matter too.

๐Ÿฑ Veterinary recommendations = What has your Vet recommended? Although your vet cannot make decisions for you, never be afraid to ask them what they would recommend - they will be able to support you through decision making and give you options.

๐Ÿฐ Behaviour = Does your pet seem stressed? Is your pet acting out of character?

Itโ€™s a difficult decision which we never want to have to make as pet owners. But sometimes euthanasia is the only way in which we can ease our beloved companionโ€™s pain and suffering. Letting them slip away quietly and peacefully can be an act of kindness to your pet.

If you are wanting to have a judgement free chat with one of the team about making the decision or want to know more about the process please call 07393 617040 or you can email us on [email protected].

Just out on a visit and I passed a man walking his two Newfoundland dogs and it's 24C! Can only imagine how hot those poor dogs must be.

No dog ever died from missing a walk but unfortunately I've seen dogs die because of one. Please don't take the risk. Their life might depend on it ๐Ÿ˜ข
