How the Water Treadmill works:

The Water Treadmill improves fitness and strength and also aids in the treatment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries. The water provides a degree of pressure and support around the limbs and the horse has to work harder against the resistance of the water. This will result in improved stride length on dry land, tighten core strength muscles and ligaments

around the stifle, improve suppleness through the back, develop top line and increase cardiovascular activity, strength and stamina. The cold water on the lower limbs also provides a massaging and cooling effect, excellent for horses recovering from leg problems. Depending on the depth, the water also reduces some of the concussive forces which can also be beneficial during rehabilitation. When the horses walk on the treadmill in water they lift their legs up in a higher more vertical plane in a safe and controlled environment. This has the benefit of increasing joint flexion and exaggerates the use of the back muscles developing them symmetrically. Without interference from the rider the horse is encouraged to work in a balanced straight line. The treadmill has a variety of speeds and the depth of water is altered depending on the training program which is tailored to each individual horses needs by either your vet or by Claire Dyson and her team. Positive results have been achieved with horses from all equine disciplines and references are available on request. It not only aids rehabilitation of the injured horse, but it is also an excellent way to improve fitness when regularly included in your horses training program. The infrared lights provide a pleasant warming effect which improves circulation and relaxes the muscles allowing the horse to work to its optimum ability, reducing the risk of injury and aiding recovery after work. The bulbs also provide a valuable source of vitamin D, which is essential for joint and bone health and helps the body absorb calcium. The solarium has the added benefit of drying the horse following a session on the Water Treadmill. Our Facilities:

It's so much more than 'just a walk'... 🐎

Of all the paces, walk is the most overlooked — and many riders and coaches say it is the hardest of all the gaits to train in a horse.

Walk is a four-beat gait, without a moment of suspension, and at least two hooves will be on the ground at any point in the step sequence.

👉🏻 Free walk: the horse is relaxed and supple over their back. Their head and neck stretches out and down, and there is a clear over-track (this is where the hind hoof steps in front of the hoof print made by the foreleg, rather than in it.

👉 Extended walk: the horse is in a longer frame and showing maximum ground cover with a greater over-track than the other types of walk.

👉🏻 Collected walk: the horse has shorter steps and is showing more elevation and activity in hind leg. The rider has a shorter rein and the horse is working in a higher frame.

👉🏼 Medium walk: The horse should stride forward with purpose (think marching) and the rhythm should be regular and relaxed, but with energy.

If dressage is your thing, the walk is worth double marks in places, so it pays to get it right! 🏵
