As the weather heats up this weekend, we expect the smell of the BBQ to take over Oxfordshire! Here’s a few tips to ensure that your pets stay safe whilst you enjoy the outdoors:

🔥 Be careful to keep pets away from the heat and ensure that any potentially poisonous substances (like firelighters, charcoal etc) are kept out of their reach
🍗 The smell of cooking meats will be very enticing to your pet but cooked bones, skewers and particularly, corn-on-the-cob (which cannot be digested and causes blockages) can all have nasty consequences – make sure they are out of reach and if you drop anything, be very quick to pick it up
🍔 Greasy food can upset your pets digestive system – it is kinder to keep them to their usual diet or a bit of plain cooked chicken (if you cannot resist those puppy eyes!)

And of course, access to shade and fresh cool water is essential for your pet. Do not walk them in the heat of the day and never leave them in your car as temperatures will rise very very rapidly.

Stay safe and have fun!

This is gorgeous Guinea Pig, Digestive!

She came to see us for a sore eye that was not healing. After applying some local dye to help view any ulcerations in the eye, Vet Alice was able to see a small blade of grass - this was successfully removed (after applying some local anaesthetic so Digestive did not feel any discomfort) carefully using a cotton bud. Digestive was sent home with some drops to help her eye heal.

Vet Alice has a post-graduate certificate in ophthalmology and really enjoys helping patients with eye problems. She runs clinics at both our Cholsey and Great Western Park branches. https://www.larkmead.co.uk/small-animal-vets/about/our-team

Although garden w**ds can be annoying, w**d killer should be used sparingly around animals.

🌱Weed killer can cause major issues for cats especially when it comes to breathing. Most w**d killers contain a chemical known as glyphosate which has side effects including skin and mouth irritation, gastrointestinal issues if consumed and can even lead to death.
🌱Dogs who are exposed to w**d killer can experience breathing issues although this more often seen in cats.

Common symptoms include:
• Burns or sores around mouth, nose and or paws.
• Itchy skin or rashes.
• Drooling.
• Difficulty breathing.
• Vomiting.
• Diarrhoea.

If you think your pet has been exposed to w**d killer, please call us to book an appointment and ideally bring details of the product (as we can go through the ingredients)
