🌾 A Tiny Grass Seed, A Very Sore Ear, and One Very Brave Boy 🐾❤️
This handsome 5-year-old Cocker Spaniel, Leo, came to see us after developing sudden head shaking and a very painful left ear. Despite feeling uncomfortable, he was incredibly brave and made sure to bring along his favourite comfort toy for moral support. 🧸
On examination, we discovered the culprit: a large grass seed lodged deep inside his ear canal. Once removed, he was immediately much more comfortable — and was rewarded with plenty of fuss for being such a good boy! 💚
🌱 Why are grass seeds a problem?
At this time of year, grass seeds are one of the most common seasonal hazards we see in pets. Their sharp, dart-like shape means they can easily become trapped and migrate into:
👂 Ears
👃 Noses
👁️ Eyes
🐾 Between the toes
🩹 Under the skin
Because they can only move forwards, they may travel deeper into tissues, causing pain, infection, abscesses, and sometimes requiring sedation or surgery to remove.
⚠️ Signs to watch for:
• Sudden head shaking or ear scratching
• Holding the head to one side
• Sneezing repeatedly or nosebleeds
• Excessive licking of paws
• Swelling, redness, or discharge from the skin
• Squinting or rubbing at the eyes
🐕 Prevention tips:
✔️ Check your pet’s ears, paws, and coat after walks, especially through long grass.
✔️ Keep fur trimmed around feet and ears if recommended for your pet’s breed.
✔️ Avoid areas with long, dry grasses where possible.
✔️ Seek veterinary advice promptly if you notice any of the signs above.
We’re pleased to report that this lovely boy was soon feeling much happier and went home with his faithful comfort toy still firmly by his side. ❤️
