🌾 A Tiny Grass Seed, A Very Sore Ear, and One Very Brave Boy 🐾❤️

This handsome 5-year-old Cocker Spaniel, Leo, came to see us after developing sudden head shaking and a very painful left ear. Despite feeling uncomfortable, he was incredibly brave and made sure to bring along his favourite comfort toy for moral support. 🧸

On examination, we discovered the culprit: a large grass seed lodged deep inside his ear canal. Once removed, he was immediately much more comfortable — and was rewarded with plenty of fuss for being such a good boy! 💚

🌱 Why are grass seeds a problem?

At this time of year, grass seeds are one of the most common seasonal hazards we see in pets. Their sharp, dart-like shape means they can easily become trapped and migrate into:

👂 Ears
👃 Noses
👁️ Eyes
🐾 Between the toes
🩹 Under the skin

Because they can only move forwards, they may travel deeper into tissues, causing pain, infection, abscesses, and sometimes requiring sedation or surgery to remove.

⚠️ Signs to watch for:

• Sudden head shaking or ear scratching
• Holding the head to one side
• Sneezing repeatedly or nosebleeds
• Excessive licking of paws
• Swelling, redness, or discharge from the skin
• Squinting or rubbing at the eyes

🐕 Prevention tips:

✔️ Check your pet’s ears, paws, and coat after walks, especially through long grass.
✔️ Keep fur trimmed around feet and ears if recommended for your pet’s breed.
✔️ Avoid areas with long, dry grasses where possible.
✔️ Seek veterinary advice promptly if you notice any of the signs above.

We’re pleased to report that this lovely boy was soon feeling much happier and went home with his faithful comfort toy still firmly by his side. ❤️

Have you checked your pet for grass seeds after today’s walk? 🌿🐾

🐾 Patient Spotlight: Nelly’s Delicate Dental Procedure 🦷

Meet Nelly, a four-month-old Labrador puppy who belongs to one of our wonderful nurses.

After fracturing her lower canine tooth, Nelly required a surgical extraction to remove the damaged baby tooth. While extracting a fractured tooth can be challenging in any patient, procedures in young puppies require extra care and precision.

At Nelly’s age, the permanent (adult) canine tooth is already developing beneath the baby tooth. During surgery, it is essential to carefully remove the fractured tooth while protecting the developing adult canine bud. Damage to this structure could affect the eruption and health of the permanent tooth later on.

Using delicate surgical techniques, the fractured tooth was successfully removed while preserving the underlying adult tooth bud. Nelly recovered beautifully and is already back to enjoying life as a playful Labrador puppy!

🐶 Did you know?
Puppies begin losing their baby teeth from around 4–6 months of age as their adult teeth develop and erupt. If a baby tooth becomes fractured, prompt veterinary assessment is important to prevent pain, infection, and potential complications for the developing adult tooth.

We’re delighted with Nelly’s recovery and proud of the care our team provided to ensure the best outcome for her future dental health. ❤️

During stressful events like fireworks, pets may panic and run away. They can easily end up in dangerous situations, including accidents such as being hit by a car. Even if your pet appears fine and has no visible injuries, this should always be treated as an emergency. 🚑

Here’s what to do in this situation:

👉 Stay calm. Your pet can sense your emotions, so remaining calm is crucial for making clear decisions and helping your pet feel more secure.

👉 Assess the scene. Make sure you are in a safe location away from traffic before approaching them.

👉 Move your pet to safety. If your pet is in the road, carefully move them to a safer area. Use a blanket or a flat, stiff surface as a stretcher to avoid twisting their spine and avoid moving their head or neck. Be aware that if your pet is in pain, they might bite or scratch you.

👉 Cover your pet. Use a blanket to help keep them warm and prevent shock.

👉 Look for bleeding. If you notice bleeding, apply gentle, firm pressure to any wounds with a clean cloth. Do not try to remove any objects that might be lodged in the wound.

👉 Get them to the vet! Call us to inform that you are on your way with a pet that’s been in a car accident and bring your pet to us.

Again, even if your pet seems okay, they may have internal injuries that require immediate veterinary care, so bringing them to us is always the best thing to do.

Have you ever heard of compassion fatigue? 🤔

Compassion fatigue is a state of emotional and physical exhaustion that often happens to people who care for other people or pets. Vet professionals are vulnerable to this because they deal with stressful cases, grief and loss daily.

So, how can you help?

❤️ Be patient and kind with our team

❤️ It means a lot to simply say “thank you”

❤️ Leave a positive review if you feel like doing so

Compassion fatigue is a harsh reality, but having compassion from pet owners can help vet professionals deal with it in the best possible way.

🐾💕 Brave Boys, Big Milestone! 💕🐾

Meet Maui & Meeko — two very handsome brothers who were neutered last week and are doing wonderfully. 🥹❤️

While it wasn’t their favorite adventure, neutering is one of the most important things we can do for our cats’ long-term health and wellbeing.

🌟 Why neutering matters:
✔️ Helps prevent certain cancers and reproductive diseases
✔️ Reduces the risk of roaming and getting into fights
✔️ Can decrease stress-related behaviors and spraying
✔️ Helps reduce the number of unwanted kittens needing homes
✔️ Supports a longer, healthier life

A week later, Maui and Meeko are recovering beautifully and are back to enjoying all the important things in life: cozy naps, playtime, treats, and keeping a close eye on everything happening around the house. 🛏️🐱🐱

Looking at these sweet faces, you’d never guess they recently had such a big day! 😍

We’re so proud of our brave boys and grateful to see them feeling more like themselves every day. 💙💙

Unfortunately, cancer can be a common health condition in older hedgehogs. This can affect the internal organs, skin or reproductive organs.🦔

Signs of cancer can include:

🦔 Reduced appetite

🦔 Weight loss

🦔 Lethargy

🦔 Lumps or swellings

These signs may not mean that your hedgehog has cancer, but it’s best to get them checked as quickly as possible. Early intervention is key, and some tumours can be treated.

Always make us aware of any concerns with your pet hedgehog.
