❗Avian Flu – Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI)❗

We have received reports of a small number of dead birds around the harbour and it is possible that this is due to avian flu. The UK Health Security Agency has said that the risk to the public from this bird flu strain is very low. It mainly affects birds.

• Do not touch or move any dead or sick wild birds.
• Dogs should be kept away from any carcasses.
• Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water if you touch wild bird faeces or feathers. For more advice go to the NHS website.
• If you find dead wild waterfowl (swans, geese or ducks) or other dead wild birds, such as gulls or birds of prey, you should report them to the Defra helpline 03459 335577 or online at www.gov.uk/guidance/report-dead-wild-birds
• Defra may collect some of these birds and test them to help understand how the disease is distributed geographically and in different types of bird, not all birds will be collected. Wild birds are susceptible to a range of diseases and injuries and not all dead birds will have been infected with avian influenza.
• Where dead birds are not required for surveillance purposes it is the landowner’s responsibility to safely dispose of the carcases.

West Sussex Wildlife Protection has recently assessed the family of swans residing on the lake. The cygnet has shown signs of corneal oedema, which can be an early symptom of avian influenza (bird flu). However, it is reassuring that the cygnet is otherwise in good body condition and continues to eat well.

During our assessment, we also observed that the pen (female swan) is missing an eye. Unfortunately, we do not know the cause of this injury, though we have our suspicions.

We have been in contact with The Swan Sanctuary and agreed to continue monitoring the swans closely, with volunteers conducting daily welfare checks around the lake.

We kindly ask local residents to assist by support feeding the swans and other wildlife on the pond. Appropriate foods include:
• Brown, wholemeal, or seeded bread (in small amounts)
• Specialist swan or duck food
• Peas, sweetcorn, and lettuce

Your support is greatly appreciated in helping us care for the local wildlife.

Thank you,
West Sussex Wildlife Protection

Another call for Lolan missing from North Road. It’s been two weeks now 😞

Hello Mrs G. I was thinking about reposting my post today. If no luck nothing more I can do for Lolan. I’ve been trying two week tomorrow I know he’s got anxiety and he’s scared of fireworks, so today will not help as it’s fireworks night, but hoped someone has seen my baby somewhere please 🙏

*UPDATE- He’s home! ❤️

🎄🐾 A HOME FOR CHRISTMAS – LET’S FILL OUR WINDOWS WITH LOVE! 🐾🎄

Hello everyone! I’m Donna, manager of The Cat and Rabbit Rescue Charity Shop on the High Street, and this Christmas our windows are celebrating love, hope, and second chances. 💕

Because of your kindness and donations — and the amazing dedication of our staff and volunteers — so many cats, rabbits, and guinea pigs have found their forever homes. 🐱🐰🐹

To celebrate, we’re creating a “Forever Home Tree” in our shop window, decorated with photos of rescued pets from our wonderful community. 🌟
If you’ve adopted a cat, rabbit, or guinea pig (from us or any rescue), please bring in a small printed photo (or email one to us) and we’ll hang it proudly on our tree.

🐾 And we haven’t forgotten our canine companions! We’re also creating “The Doggy Window – Our Community’s Best Friends”, celebrating all the dogs who bring joy and love into our lives — whether rescued, adopted, or simply adored. 🐶

📍 Cat & Rabbit Rescue Charity Shop, High Street
📅 Bring in your photo during opening hours
💌 Include your pet’s name and adoption year if you’d like
🦴 And don’t forget to bring your doggie in for a treat! 💖

Let’s fill our windows with love, light, and happy tails this Christmas — because every paw deserves a place by the fire. 🎁✨

*Update- Donna would like to thank everyone for their pics and stories of adopted pets, the window is now full to bursting and they can’t fit anymore in!

This is quite lovely 🥰

‼️ DO NOT FEED THE BIRDS AT EAST BEACH POND TODAY‼️

There is a concerted effort underway to capture the remaining cygnet at East beach pond today. Here is a message from West Sussex Wildlife Protection.

Community Notice – Please Do Not Feed the Swans at East Beach Today

West Sussex Wildlife Protection will be attending East Beach this afternoon to attempt the rescue of the remaining unwell cygnet. To give us the best chance of safely coaxing the swans out of the water, we kindly ask that no one feeds them today.

Please also avoid crowding the area while the rescue is in progress, as this can make the birds more anxious and difficult to approach.

The cygnet will be assessed for possible bird flu, and we will keep everyone updated once we know more.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. 🙏

Please be there if you can.

There is a public meeting next Thursday May 15th at the Methodist church hall.
It starts at 6pm, and it’s a chance for everyone to discuss and share their views on the issues surrounding the wildlife killings, and find out what is being done to curb it. The meeting also gives the police a chance to address the public concern and anger.
