As the leaves turn and autumn walks begin, it’s important to remember that conkers can be dangerous for dogs. These shiny seeds contain a toxin called aesculin, found in all parts of the horse chestnut tree – seeds, bark, leaves and flowers. If eaten, aesculin can upset your dog’s stomach, causing vomiting, diarrhoea, drooling, or loss of appetite ⚠️

Conkers can also be a choking hazard or cause an obstruction in the stomach.

👉 If you think your dog has eaten a conker, or is showing any concerning signs, always contact your vet for advice.

📢 Share this with your fellow dog lovers to help keep every four-legged friend safe on their autumn adventures.

These two breeds may be tough to tell apart upon first glance, but there's many key differences.

The Leonberger (Above): The town of Leonberg in Southwest Germany has on its crest the dog that was created there in 1840 by the mayor, Heinrich Essig. He was helped by the monks of St Bernard who had crossed their St Bernards with Newfoundlands and this cross was the basis of the new breed. It is thought that there was also an infusion of Pyrenean Mountain Dog blood. Essig wanted to create a dog of leonine appearance to match the lions on the town's heraldic crest.

The Estrela Mountain Dog (Below): The mountain range known as the Serra da Estrela, in central Portugal, was the region where the breed was developed as a flock guard and he can work on the summits 2000 feet above sea level or on the parched summer lowlands. Strongly built, it is thought that there is some mastiff influence in their background. Intensely loyal to his owner, the Estrela is an excellent guard dog not only of livestock but of his owner and his territory.
