Feeding the Mare Prior to Covering

The decision to put your mare in foal is a big one so making sure she is well
prepared will help maximise her chances of conceiving and help avoid costly, repeat
visits coverings or lengthy spells at stud.

🐴 Mares who are significantly over or under weight are less likely to conceive
so, if your mare needs to lose or gain a lot of condition, the sooner you make
the necessary adjustments to her diet the better.
🐷 For the overweight mare or particularly good-doer, such as a native type,
calorie intake and access to grazing may need to be restricted, to encourage
weight loss. A low calorie balancer is then the perfect solution, for providing
the essential protein, vitamins and minerals she needs, for health and well-
being, without the calories.
🥕 Where additional calories are required to help a mare gain or maintain
condition, a specially formulated conditioning mix or cube is an ideal and cost-
effective choice.
🌾 Whether you feed a mix, cube or balancer, ensure it is fed at the
manufacturer's recommended levels to ensure a fully balance diet which also
helps the mare build up good nutrient reserves to support the planned
pregnancy. If you find you need to feed less than the recommended
quantities of your chosen mix or cube, it will be wise to top up the nutrient
levels with a balancer.
🍎 If, despite a fully balanced diet and being in optimum condition, your mare has
problems getting in foal, your vet and nutritionist can discuss the use of
specially formulated nutritional supplements to support fertility.
